“Consitantly Good, Great Value & Some of the best beef around”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

Let's face it Carcassonne is a tourist destination, and, there's a squillion eateries around town before you even get to the "ho hum" offerings in "La Cite" .....we've been to a lot in the main town over the past couple of years on and off and while Le Cathare may not be haute cuisine it has a hell of a lot going for it..... the menu has plenty of choice and unless you're really picky something for most tastes, good dessert menu too so save room... the wine list is un pretentious and pretty good value best of all the beef is excellent quality, as large as you want it and cooked on the open fire grill...to my mind the best way to cook meat or fish. Warmer months dining is outside unless it's looking like rain then it's indoors with a very rustic and cosy ambience, perhaps a tad warm given the open fire but then the alternative is getting soaked outside...you can't control the weather ...right? Patrick the owner / chef is welcoming, helpful and charming...so if you want a good night out, modestly & fairly priced with good food and little pretention it would be hard to go past Le Cathare. We've been around 5 times so far and will return...... we love it!

“Great find”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

Wandering around the centre of Carcassonne on a Friday evening in October, everything looked dead. We stumbled across this little restaurant by accident and it was the best meal we had all weekend. Fresh fish brought to the table and cooked on the open fire. Even the sausages for our cassoulets were cooked there. Good, cheap wine. Nice desserts. Slight issues with the toilet which caused great hilarity but highly recommended.

“Great little find”
Reviewed 11 October 2013

Recommended by friends. went on spec on a saturday lunchtime after the market. no choice on the menu, just plat du jour. Soup, salad, big chunk o froasted pork and vegetables, fresh fruit salad and glass of wine, can't remember about €15 - all cooked fresh and delicious, will definitely go again.

“Disappointed”
Reviewed 22 September 2013

We were recommended to go here on our first night. The evening was warm but the seating was inside as you can see the fire takes over the whole place we were hot too hot. The food is cooked over the open fire which may seem novel but to be honest we didn't, like it. We were there for 7 days but did',t go back.
It might be a good choice on a cold evening so at least you could keep warm
On a positive note the best creme brûlée I had all week.

“Very nice and authentic gem”
Reviewed 14 June 2013

A small but very pleasant restaurant in the ville basse. The menu is local and of excellent quality. Entrees are original and authentic. Icecream of goat cheese (with the goat salad) is recommended and the salade gersoise is formidable!
For main courses the (near local) meat is of excellent quality and not expensive. Although normally 300grams is cut, you can ask for a smaller piece. After presentation, the meat (we had entrecote) is prepared in the fireside and finished off with burning duck fat, resulting in one of the best pieces of meat we've ever had.

Wine is good and not expensive. Over half of the visitors were locals. Don't expect a very fancy restaurant; the alley next to the restaurant is where the outside tables are. The music is a 70's tape and the cutlery is from Ikea. But that all falls away with the food and the friendly service.
The deserts are nothing special; simply good. They have a Nespresso coffee machine, which made it the best coffee we had in France so far.
