“Sanctuary with a View”

We stayed here for an escape from the world break for our Wedding Anniversary.

From the moment we drove through the gates and saw the delightful house we were in love, we then turned around and saw the pool and the view of the mountains.
The photos do not do justice to the setting and ambiance of this house.its one of those places where you just feel the strains of life melt away.

We were rather spoilt for choice with rooms, all of them are lovely and tastefully furnished, we slept in the double room in the main part of the house. It was quaint and felt cosy & relaxing.
Another thing to note is that once the sun goes down it is dark here, proper dark, it amazing how much better you sleep when it's dark and quiet.

The bathroom near our bedroom was spacious with a bath and a shower in it just off a hall/study area with a well stocked bookcase.

In the same part of the house there was a large room with double & single beds and stairs to an attic room with single beds.

Downstairs the open plan living area/kitchen has everything you need and a proper size fridge, a lovely space where a family could be together without being cramped. There is also a downstairs snug sitting room which is lovely in the evenings. It has a log burning stove but unfortunately it wasn't cold enough for us to need it.

Off the kitchen there is a boiler room which leads through to what could be a self contained area for another couple with a large living area, shower room and then a spiral staircase up to a very large bedroom.

There is also a room with an ensuite shower above the garage building, it has a charming wooden external staircase leading up to it.

I was worried that the property would be too large for a couple but it is such a good space that you can open up as much as you need so it can adapt easily to comfortably accomodate many combinations. It would be particularly suitable for a multi generational group, as people could have their own space but come together to eat etc.

The pool is divine, just sitting on the loungers reading then glancing up and seeing the mountains brings a smile to your face. We swam every day as even in mid October it was refreshing but not cold. We also used the gas BBQ by the pool and ate outside on the tables provided. The pool has an easy to use alarm instead of a fence which is rather lovely as it would ruin the view to have a fence. I did wonder how I would feel if I had small children with open water but on the day we forgot to turn the alarm off getting back in to the pool it became clear that it was very effective!

The house is in a tiny hamlet not far from Carcassonne and close to Mirepoix so there are plenty of good supermarkets and markets to buy food. Mirepoix is a beautiful town with a square and cafes. When we were there they were preparing for the Apple Festival and the square was decorated with Apple statues.

The area is steeped in history particularly the crusades and the Cathars, we visited Montsegur and Carcassonne but it is also only a short drive to the coast in the summer and skiing in the winter.

I didn't want to leave and can't wait to return with the rest of the family.

“Relaxing break in a fantastic location”

Seven of us stayed in Les Gascous for two weeks. The house is a great combination of the old and new, and it's very well equipped with everything you could want.
The gardens, swimming pool and barbecue area are exactly what you need on a relaxing holiday and they were very regularly maintained.
The house is a short drive to great towns (particularly Mirepoix), and other attractions such as Carcassonne are only a bit further afield.
All told, a fantastic holiday house and location.
Strongly recommended.

“Our perfect holiday retreat”

We first spent a week at Les Gascous in 2012 as part of our family holiday in France. Our party consisted of eight, four children and four adults, spanning three generations, so we were looking for somewhere that had a bit of everything.
Les Gascous delivered on all counts. It is a characteristic rustic house with plenty of well-equipped family space. There’s a good variety of bedrooms, including an attached studio room. The living area is spacious and has all the ingredients to ensure a perfect holiday whether a large family, several families or just a large groups of friends.
Outside there is a vast amount of space to enjoy, with grassed areas leading away from the house down to a good sized pool and undercover BBQ area. We have spent many happy hours there, either playing in the warm sunshine, or just enjoying an evening meal together, whilst watching a spectacular sunset with the mountains in the background.
In summary, we enjoyed Les Gascous and the delightful French countryside so much that we returned for a further two weeks in 2013. As a family we have travelled to various areas of France and stayed in a variety of accommodation, but when asked where we like best, Gascous is way out in front as our favourite destination. So as you can see, we are hooked, and totally recommend Les Gascous as a perfect holiday retreat.

“Les Gascous is a magical and incredibly special place”
Reviewed 25 September 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We were searching earlier this year for the perfect place to go on holiday in a big family group. We looked at a number of places online but once we found Les Gascous we knew that we had found the right place. The dealings with the owner through out the process have been brilliant with him always answering our queries quickly.

When we arrived we were bowled over by the beauty of the place. The photographs on the websites are great but even so do not do it justice. The views of the Pyrenées are amazing from the garden and the house. It is a very magical place. The gardens and grounds are huge with lots of space to run around, lots of shade as well as sunny areas, completely secure, which with children was brilliant.

The swimming pool was perfect with big wide steps for the 3 years olds to play on and a good shallow end for the 6 years olds to practice their swimming. It is a decent size making adult swimming enjoyable. The view of the mountains from the pool is incredible.

The outside eating space is great. We had a large number of meals here on the large table and cooking on the gas barbeque. The table was also used throughout the day for playing games and colouring on.

The house was wonderful, just what we were looking for. Lots of space and the layout of the rooms worked very well for us. The kitchen is well equipped with a big fridge/freezer, which made cooking easy for the holiday. The table tennis table was good fun.

The house and gardens gave us enough space to spend time altogether and separately as we wanted and was great for a holiday with multiple generations.

There are plenty of places to visit nearby, the market in Mirepoix on a Monday is great and very busy, a trip to the mountains is beautiful, as is a trip to Carcassonne, to name but a few. However some of us spent most of our week at the house just completely relaxing.

We would definitely recommend this house and are seriously considering going again soon as it was so perfect. As I said above it was magical.
