The wonderful medieval city sits on an hill where you can walk around and imagine life during the Cathar period. There is only one tour in English which is a shame considering the number of english speaking visitors but is well visiting. If you haven't read Labyrinthe by Kate Mosse, give it a go as it will bring to life this city.

A truly magnifique medieval city with ramparts, walls, castle, basilica and charming winding streets. The magic of old times begins already at the entrance. The city is kept pretty and clean (public toilets were dirty, though) and you can find many shops with even interesting articles, not just cheap kitsch, and some really good restaurants with nice views to the ramparts or castle.

Entering the city is free. The castle is definitively worth a visit and costs 6,50 € per adult. Be sure to visit the ramparts as well, that’s included in the castle ticket and entrance is from within castle walls (only half of the city walls are open for public). The basilica is free, not that much to see there, but it is an essential part of the city. I also enjoyed a stroll outside the inner, higher ramparts, inside the outer ones.

3 hours is a minimum time to appreciate many aspects of the city. Even our kids wanted more than just this. History enthusiasts should reserve (at least) one full day. Be advised that the castle closes before 18:00.

Taking a walk between the walls of La Cite at dusk was fabulous. There were few other tourists at at that time of day. If you walk on the walkway next to the outer wall, the views over the surrounding area are wonderful. I felt like a kid going to Disneyland for the first time!

I have been hanging around this area for the past ten years, as we have a house here,so know it very well. Carcassonne is worth a visit once to the Citie. When you first see it , it's impressive. But my advice is go off season ,as it boasts one million tourist during peak times! That is end of June through to September, so you literally crawl through, and also the heat can be stifling. So personally I bring pals during May and end of September. It has a mixture of tack and lovely chic shops. The restaurants are pretty good, but keep away from the main square, food very average, expensive and I find the staff pretty rude. So go off the main drag and you will find a lovely mixture of places to eat. As a little teaser, if you want to do Cathar Castle supreme, go to "Chateau de Peyrepertuse". It is the nearest place to heaven. I will do a review on that next time. So watch this space!

La Cité is unique. You need to look past the cruddy plastic armour & other naff souvenirs being sold on the main street though. Ideally, visit late in the afternoon when all the tour buses and most other visitors have left. In summer, you can tour the Chateau and ramparts until 6:30pm and it's well worth the €8.50. We loved it and would recommend it highly.
