On the doorstep, yet far enough away

This is a small hotel overlooking the medieval city and, in terms of location, it really can't be beaten. It's only a short walk into the walled city and it's lovely in the evenings sitting on the terrace looking out on to the illuminated walls.

It's nicely decorated with a mixture of traditional charm and modern elegance and the staff (including their Basset Hound) is very friendly and helpful.

Continental breakfast is served to your table on the terrace and there's also a bar, swimming pool and spa. Unfortunately, there isn't a restaurant but there are numerous places to eat only five minutes' walking distance away.

All in all, a lovely place to stay if you're looking for a quality place in nice surroundings away from all the hustle and bustle.

Described as a boutique hotel, we booked here based on the photos and reviews on-line and due to its location right by the city walls which is, indeed, perfect. On arrival, the place lived up to expectations. The photos matched those on-line and the 2 x superior rooms were ok but fell slightly below expectations - comfortable but on the small and dark side with only a very small window letting in light. The shower/toilet area was actually ridiculously small and very badly planned. What the website doesn't tell you is the less-exclusive sister hotel The Montmerency (literally over the road) shares all the facilities and grounds of the Hotel du Chateau. We couldn't get a sunbed round the pool purely because the limited amount were being shared by the two hotels. Had we known that we could get a cheaper deal over the road and still benefit from all the chateau's facilities, we would have definitely opted for that. We paid a premium price for the boutique experience and top location, unaware that we could have had exactly the same benefits at a much more affordable rate by opting for the Montmerency - indeed its rooms look far more spacious. I think the whole set up is rather misleading - the rooms at the Montmerency may be slightly less plush but can you really say it is a separate hotel? Sharing the same reception, bar, grounds, breakfast area, pool, car park and spa surely makes it an annex of lesser grade rooms rather than a completely separate entity. I feel we paid far too much for exclusivity that was simply not on offer.

We stayed there for a night and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is well designed and right next to the walled city. The staff were simply fantastic and super helpful. In fact exceptional. My wife left her wedding ring and some diamond earrings in the room and after calling them, they found them and posted them to our next address in France. This whole experience tells me that this hotel and the people working there are exceptional and I salute them for the great experience and for the service beyond expectations. We will be back.

I would probably give this hotel 3.5 if that was an option. It is wonderfully situated right next to the historic city of Carcassonne (literally a 2 minute walk away) with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. We had a 'deluxe' room which was very clean with good facilities (though no drink making facilities). However, it was very small and situated next to the pool in a shady part of the hotel - despite the beautiful summer weather, it almost received no natural light and there was no view. There was a little decked area in front of it, though, which was very pleasant although also completely shaded at all times.
It was certainly a comfortable place with friendly staff. Breakfast was pleasant and there was a secure car park. However, these were (in my mind) overly expensive additions - the breakfast was €15 (excessive for what it was), the car park €10 per day and drinks were pricey (€6 for a tomato juice!). Bar food options were limited and, again, rather expensive. The pool was very welcome given the temperature, but it is very small and tended to be rather dominated by children, although we did find a few occasions where we had it almost to ourselves.
All in all, a good hotel but given the initial (relatively high) cost and all the expensive additions, I would say that it ended up not being particularly good value for money.

We stopped in Carcassonne on our way from San Sebastián to Girona Spain. The location was perfect and the amenities of the hotel were wonderful. Our room by the pool was perfect. We walked onto the walled city for dinner and to sightsee the next morning. The view of the old city was spectacular especially at night.

We stayed on our way from Provence to Bordeaux and enjoyed the hotel, the views and dinner. For us, one night was adequate. We stayed in a small but very tastefully decorated room by the pool with an outdoor patio. While we were initially concerned with the possibility of noise there was no issue. The room had a mini frig and a fully updated bathroom with a large tub and separate shower. The staff were all wonderful and the dogs very sweet. We would stay again.
