“perfect location, great design but terrible service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2010

This hotel is in a lovely location right on the walls of the cite/old town of carcassonne. The views from the terrace/bar are spectacular. The hotel looks lovely and is beautifully designed, lovely sofas, lighting bathrooms etc. It obviously takes a pride in this and seems like a showpiece as it is not all that functional - steps where slopes could be etc. The staff are reticent to help - but OK when asked - except for in the bar when one eve we waited half an hour and only saw one other guest get served before we gave up and the next day we bouught 2 ordinary bottles of beer for 6 euros each. We waited 25 minutes before anyone even bought coffee at breakfast time when they were frustratingly disorganised. We had room 15 - which is a shack behind a fence at the side of the car park - it too was beautifully decorated with circular bath and wet room - but smelt damp at all times possibly because it was built into the hillside and only had windows at the front. It was 270 Euros a night. Overall a really disappointing stay in what is a perfect location.

We stayed in the Red Room - gorgeous. Really comfortable and amazing for the price of the room. The terrace is a delight and we enjoyed pre dinner drinks, late night drinks and breakfast there - we did move back to our room too! The view is lovely and its quieter and much cheaper than the hotels within the city walls. Very touristy inside the city.
Pool was ok. The dogs were a delight too.
Great value for the setting and the quality of our room.

I realise this review is overdue, but I must admit that our stay last year in the Hotel du Chateau was ideal.
We stayed in one of the rooms by the pool, the quality and cleanliness of the room was just fine. The pool was a mere step away & it was really nice to have a private terrace in front of the room.
The staff were very friendly & indulged our attempts to speak pretty bad French at them.
We primarily booked the hotel as we were going to a concert, however If we had need to visit Carcassonne in the future we would book this hotel like a shot.

Excellent boutique hotel directly opposite the gate to the medieval city. We booked a superior room which was luxurious, clean and ideally located next to reception. The terrace was delightful, picture the scene-sunshine,a glass of wine curled up on a huge sofa with cushions gazing at the walls of La Cite. The staff, when checking in,were attentive and helpful. Breakfast though was disappointing-service was slow-(hardy any staff around now!) with limited choice. We were presented with a basket of croissant, bread & pain au chocolat plus ham & cheese. Although adequate, delicious and fresh there was no alternative for those with special dietary requirements. For the price I would have expected more variety. Overall though, a beautiful hotel for a special occasion.

We loved this hotel! The staff are efficient and very friendly, making you feel at home straight away! The hotel is a fantastic base for exploring the old cite and you can enjoy it well into the evening on the plentiful outside seating of the hotel, whilst having a drink from the hotel bar.
The hotel also has secure parking as standard. The breakfast is well worth the 12 euros with the option to enjoy it on the terrace! We couldn't recommend this hotel more and would stay here again! One word of advice- select you restaurant in the cite with care, avoid the square full of restaurants!

We spent 5 nights here, a little too long for Carcassonne itself I think, two to three nights here would be perfect although we did use it as a base to travel around the area. The hotel was very good however, our room was clean and comfortable and we found the staff at the hotel extremely helpful. Free parking at the hotel is a real bonus. Breakfast was reasonable value I think, a choice of straight 'continental' i.e. coffee with croissant and pane au chocolat etc or with meats and cheese if preferred. The pool was very popular although we didn't venture in ourselves. The walled city is literally two minutes walk from here and has a great view, particularly at night when the walls are illuminated. Overall, we had thoroughly enjoyable stay.

The location and service were excellent but we were not that impressed with our "delux" room. It was in a new part of the hotel built at the back of the swimming pool under quite a busy road. They have have tunnelled into a bank to make space for a small block of 3 or 4 rooms and unfortunately it feels a bit like you are staying in a cave (i.e. a bit musty and claustrophobic). They have clearly spent a lot of money on the fittings (high spec sound system, marble bathrooms etc) in an attempt to compensate for the somewhat unpromising location of the new block, but it has not really worked. Judging by the other reviews, the rooms in the main hotel are really nice and cost less, so stay there if you can.
