“Beautiful house- great location”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

We stayed here for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were made very welcome by the owners, Mr and Mme Mazet and they could not do enough to help us, whether it was directions or restaurant recommendations. The room was beautifully restored with a lot of attention to detail, huge bathroom with loads of hot water and fresh towels and the bed was one of the most comfy we have ever slept in. We were at the front of the hotel and though there was a busy road outside the double glazing was such that you didn't hear the traffic. The B and B was in a perfect location for both the old town and the new town (2 minutes walk from the Demeure and there was the most fabulous view of La Cite from the new bridge!) The breakfast was lovely, fresh bread and and croissants with gorgeous fruit preserves , fresh fruit, cereal and yoghurt and coffee to die for!! The only fly in the ointment was the weather and there's not much you can do about that. We would have loved to have spent some time in the lovely garden. We would stay here again in a flash!!

This is a distinguished and tasteful residence from which to sample Carcassonne - obviously, the restoration has been a labour of love. No - it's not the cheapest accommodation available, but it is probably the most tasteful.

It would probably not be the place to stay if you are averse to walking, although the centre of Carcassonne is not far, and the Demeure lies at the foot of the hill on which the Old Citadel is located. For us, the location was ideal and our room at the rear suffered none of the road noise that has been mentioned in other reviews.

I notice that a handful of reviews found the welcome less than fulsome. That was not our experience - M. Mazet is not servile, but a good host who takes a pride in his creation, and who
expects no more from you in terms of language than that you engage with him in crossing the barrier that we English, in particular, suffer from. We found his suggestions and guidance re. the locality very helpful. We arrived late in the evening, having decided to walk from the station, and M. Mazet was at the door as we trundled our cases across the bridge. On the morning of departure, he ensured that a taxi for the airport was at the door.

A thoroughly enjoyable stop-over - very close to the old city.

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear may be quieter if you are a sensitive soul.

Very nice B&B in a beautiful city. We stayed here for 6 nights, spending a couple of days exploring Carcassonne, and then escaping out into the countryside to visit castles, mountains, and villages. We also visited Toulouse, which is about an hour away by car.

The proprietor, Bernard, was very friendly and helpful, checking the regional weather forecasts for us every morning and advising us on interesting places to visit and good places to eat. I managed to speak with him in my broken schoolboy French, but luckily my girlfriend is fluent; if we'd only spoken English we'd have still been able to communicate but it might have been more of a struggle.

The B&B itself is lovely, a very "French" looking turn of the century building that's been restored within the last few years. Our room was clean, spacious and well furnished, with a view of the garden and typical French shutters as well as curtains. The bathroom had a huge shower, but no bath - not a problem for me. Breakfast is very good - fresh bread, croissants, jams, etc. served at a large dining room table with other guests seated at the far end; if you share a language this allows you to have a conversation, but if you don't then it's not intrusive.

As others have mentioned, there's parking available, and it's only a 10 minute walk to both "la Cite" and the lower town, but it's also easy to get out of the town if you're going further afield. Difficult to fault really!

There can be fewer more delightful places to stay than Demeure St Louis. It has a great location between the old and new city, both within easy walking distance, so no need for a car. Mon Bernard Mazet is an excellent host and very helpful. He is obviously very proud of the extensive renovations he has overseen at the hotel which are very tasteful. He has little English (as do most inhabitants of the town) but is most patient towards guests with limited French. We mostly frequented restaurants recommended by Mon Bernard and were not disappointed with any of his suggestions. To top it all he most kindly collected us from the airport and dropped us back again for our departure.

Room Tip: The two ground floor rooms have their own little private lobby between them, making them feel a bit...

I really couldn't imagine anywhere better to stay and was so sad to leave.

On arrival we were greeted by the sweetest, most helpful owner. His English was not perfect but that caused no issues. He assisted us in parking as we had parked a few streets away and insisted on carrying my bag. He recommended what turned out to be an excellent restaurant and was very pleased to hear about it afterwards. he was always available for us when we needed him.

The house is beautiful inside. There is a large dining room, you can almost imagine you are dining at the turn of the last century. There is a most attractive salon as well and a pretty garden. The family who own the place were often in the kitchen so there was a delightful smell of home cooking filling the place in the evening.

Our room faced the front but was well insulated so there was no noise. I had the best night sleep here on my whole month long trip. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the bedding was of a sort I have never slept on before (a kind of French country linen-very nice). There were so many tasteful touches in the room to make it more special. The bathroom was new but done in an old style so was excellent with all the amenities you could wish for. The room was quite large with high ceilings.

I thought the location was good. It was about a 10 minute walk to the old town up a slight hill. Not a difficult walk at all. It was also close to the new town, about a 15 minute walk to the canal. While obviously the old town is the main attraction the new town is certainly not without charm.

If I return to Carcassonne I would not hesitate staying here again.

Demeure St Louis was even better than its own promotional material! Easily found in a central position, it nevertheless has secure and peaceful grounds with guest parking. Our spacious two-bedroom apartment opened through delightfully ancient french windows onto a green and peaceful garden and a pond filled with greedy colourful fish and a plashing waterfall. The kitchen was large and generously appointed, and the furnishings and decoration were restful and chic. Note: vintage linen monogrammed wedding sheet on comfortable king size bed! Worthy of Cote Sud magazine.

Ideally placed for La Citee and Carcassonne's town which are a few easy minutes walk; masses of restaurant opportunities.

Bernard was helpful and attentive and prepared to speak in English (and probably other languages too) if needed. We had an perfect and substantial French breakfast - antique silver and flatware added to the ambiance. We pored over the' before and after' refurbishment pics, congratulated Bernard on his vision and success and left, wishing that we could have stayed for a month.

Room Tip: We had the two bed-roomed garden apartment that allowed us to step outside from our sitting room - i...

My wife and I spent 6 nights in the Demeure Saint Louis as a base for exploring Carcassonne and the surrounding area. The old manor house has been beautifully and tastefully renovated and modernised, has a quiet, secluded garden, and secure parking. The host, Bernard Mazet, is kind, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the area. Our visit was very much enhanced by his local knowledge and advice regarding restaurants and places of particular interest. I believe that it would be difficult to find a better place to stay in Carcassonne in terms of ambiance, service, facilities, and situation (mid way between and an easy walk for either Cite or Bastide).

Room Tip: Our room, the Saint Louis, overlooked the garden and was well appointed and quiet, but I would think...
