Owner description: Carcassonne was settled as early as the 6th century BC and later became an important Roman town. It was fortified in the 4th century and was a strategic site in the Middle Ages. It took on its definitive shape in the 13th century with the king’s decision to construct the distinctive double-walled ramparts and extend the castle. The city was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century and is a testimony to 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,600 years of history. See a 12-minute film combining 3-D images and close-up footage; walk along the galleries, the fortified walls and the north ramparts; discover the museum of masonry and many other attractions. Designated world heritage site by UNESCO. Open:> April to September: from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.> October to March: from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last admission 45 minutes before closing time. Do not miss this place, no matter what your interests. Family friendly for kids, as well those who are there for the historical value of the castle. One of the best examples of the traditional castle styles so familiar to everyone that has ever seen a movie set in Medieval times. You will feel as if you are on a Movie set. Be sure to tour the entire castle grounds, and go down on the main bridge of the city below for the best views of the ramparts, day and night.

Went here with friends and it was a great walk round the castle there are plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and hotels in side the castle walls. There was a charge if you want to go into the Central keep other wise it's free to walk the castle.

This Castle is worth your time and money by itself but particularly when you do it as part your Carcassone experience. Enjoy the Castle with the magnificent views and all the history that this medieval city offers.

The castle is just as well veiwed fro the outside, and spectacular at night from the new bridge. Very crowded inside, with clothing and souvenir at every turn. The castle itself is a little disappointing as a history tour, but an amazing structure, could be a lot better with good sinage and explanations.
6.50 Euro entry plus audio guide if you want one.

Without the status given to the City and The Labrynth, written by Kate Mosse, I would probably never have visited Carcassonne. It would have been my loss.
If you can be talked into visiting the City, I would really recommend a visit to the Cite. I would also recommend the audio-guide. Not many people were using them but we always use them now. We just think we would miss out on so much of the information without them that, given the cost of arriving there, the cost of admission, the likelihood of not returning, it's a very small price to pay.
We also noticed lots of School trips and went to visit around 12:30and as a result missed all the children.
We certainly got a lot out of it and would thoroughly recommend it.

Thank Robin S
