“Perfect accommodation in ideal location”
Reviewed 8 July 2016 for a stay in June 2016

Lovely welcome from Eileen and much appreciated meal and bubbly! Location of the cottage is perfect for enjoying the Canal and accessing all parts of the City. Perfectly placed for the railway station allowing ease of access to other towns and spots along the Canal du Midi. We particularly enjoyed visiting Limoux and Lac Cavayere. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a place in Carcassonne and we will definitely stay again should we return to the area.

“Wow Amazing”
Reviewed 30 October 2015 for a stay in October 2015

This is a fantastic place to base yourself and explore beautiful Carcassonne and the surrounding areas. Eileen, the owner, gave us an amazing welcome and looked after us so well and offered us lots of great advice during our stay. Incredible value for money considering the situation right by the canal and the facilities that are offered at this property. It has a lovely balcony to enjoy a glass of wine, original French furnishings in every room and our bed was so comfortable. The kitchen too is really well fitted out with washing machine, microwave oven, hob to cook on etc . However the highlight has to be the sense of history in this lovely French canal cottage. It is only a 5 - 10 min stroll along the canal bank to the town. If you want an original French property that oozes charm then this is the place to stay. Can't recommend it highly enough....we will be back!

“Ideal base to explore the area”

If you have a car and want a good base to explore the area, Canal Cottage is an ideal place to make your home. If on ‘foot’ then walking to the Bastide or Citie are an easy walk and the station is close by if you want to travel further afield.
The cottage is all on one level and sits on the road just across from the Canal Midi, the kitchen is fairly basic in equipment, but the furnishings, towels and bed linens which are provided are of good quality. The balcony is a pleasant place to sit, although we found it somewhat out of the sun, but ideal during the heat of the summer as it offered shade. If you want to watch the world go by then you can sit across from the cottage on the tow path of the Canal. Eileen, who lives in an apartment below the ‘cottage’, is a most welcoming and accommodating host, eager to please and made sure we wanted for nothing.
As for things to do, other than the attractions of Carcassonne, a walk down the tow path to the series of 3 locks further up the canal are a great way to spend a few hours, walking and watching the boat crews struggle with ropes in the locks. Drive out to the Chateau Auzias at Paretlongue, a few minuits drive from the Leclerc supermaket for a tour of the vineyards and winery. Of course the Cathar castles are a must, particularly Montsegur; villages of Mirepoix and Lagrasse; also Rennes-le-Chateau.

“Good Place to Stay”

10 minutes walk from centre of town - easy access to shops and restaurants and markets.

Good clean roomy apartment, very helpful owner keen to ensure that we were comfortable and weren't needing anything.

Gigantic bed in main bedroom had a very comfy mattress.

Shower and bathroom were excellent. Lots of room in the shower, ( some other places crammed the shower into an impossibly small space)

Far far better than some of the other places we have stayed in.

Regards

Bill

“Authentic French”

We recent.y stayed at the canal cottage for three nights and had a lovely stay. Eileen was very welcoming and ensured we knew all about the cottage as well as lots of recommendations about what to do. The cottage has a french rustic charm and is was well equipped and very clean. The beds were very comfortable and the cottage quiet. We were fortunate enough to be invited downstairs into the villa for a dinner feast with Eileen and her daughter Jannika. Lovely home cooked food and great company. Eileen also made pancakes for our boys the next morning with chocolate butter - very yummy!! There are also a couple of excellent restaurants near by which we found to be very friendly and great value for money. The canal cottage is highly recommended.

“A perfect spot!”

The cottage was as good as it looked, and the location even better. Less than10 minutes walk from the railway station, the stop for the airport shuttle ( 25 minutes, times to suit flights, E5 per person) and the gateway to the Black mountains ( E1 per person all the way to Quillan, if you want!).
Cottage super clean and comfy, balcony/patio really relaxing, beds HUGE. Canal truly a stone's throw from front door- with convenient bench just opposite for drinks after the traffic's gone.
Directions to a SUPERB local restaurant, as well as Eileen's personal tour! Easy walk to La Cite, through bustling centre. Also 10-15 minutes walk to Carrefoure Express for quality shopping. JUST GO!

“What a gem!”

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this little gem. It was lovely and clean. It has been recently decorated with a very French feel which is partly why we chose it. It was great to be able to leave the windows and doors open in the hot weather.Eileen and Jannika were great hosts and nothing was too much trouble...they popped back to see if we needed anything several times. It was lovely sitting out on the balcony in the evening and we were lucky enough to hear Janni singing. If you wanted to stay without a car there is plenty to do within walking distance and the railway is nearby. You must go on the canal boats. We had a lovely ride down with a picnic lunch stop before returning. Restaurants in the square and the market are within a leisurely 15 minute walk. Carcassonne old cite was a fantastic day out and you can walk to it if you are fairly fit,we spent about five hours there. It is also only about 45 mins to the coast Eileen will advise you to the best beaches. Thank-you Eileen and Jannika we had a wonderful relaxing holiday and hope to return.
