Walk down from the cite and into the shopping area.
Plenty of places to eat and drink and to generally soak up the atmosphere.
Walk down to the Canal du Midi, great place to watch the people who have just rented their boat negotiate the lock!

Cross the old bridge into the Bastille and it is great to explore all the old streets which will eventually take you to the place Carnot where you need to have a drink in one of the many places around the square and people watch

Old, charming town with very narrow streets and a wonderful central square, Place Carnot, with many small cafés and outdoor seating. Helpful Tourist office centrally located with extended hours in the summer.

Walking around one notices there are many empty storefronts and many buildings A Vendre, For Sale. The town needs a strong tourist business. One is reminded of the weak global economy.

Travelling over the new bridge with the Cité on your left, look for Parking Gambetta. It's underground, plenty of space, and cheap. Head towards the main town , enjoy a drink or lunch in Place Carnot and then explore or shop. It has all the usual french shops and a market in place Carnot for vegetables. It's grid system so you can't get lost.

Visited Carcassonne for a long weekend and stayed at the Ibis which is well located between the old and new parts of the town. The Place Carnot is the centre of the district, lined by cafes and restaurants, and home to the market three times a week. Not particularly remarkable but with some nice shops, the Cathedral, the bell tower for good views and the Musee Beaux Artes for some respectable Corots. Be aware that many things close on Sunday and Monday. Kate Mosse does a walk around the Bastide, linked to her book 'Sepulchre', which gives some of the background. The Café Felix on the Place Carnot is a good place for your morning coffee and croissant. If you want to go back in time have a drink or a meal at the Hotel Terminus, near the station, which is also the starting out point for boat trips or bike rides along the Canal du Midi. There is also a 1 euro train ride from Carcassone to Quillan via Limoux (just over an hour) which must be one of the bargains of the century.
