Domaine de Cure
Reviewed 6 January 2012

My youngest brother, Italian wife and daughter live in Italy and I don't have the chance to see them as often as I would like. But spring of 2011 found me in France and they graciously offered to join me. A quick visit to the internet found Domaine de Cure. We arrived in the late afternoon on a hot May day. The drive from Italy was ten hours and my nine year old niece could not get into the pool fast enough! We had a full, leisurely week to enjoy a balance of quiet time at the gite and visits to the surrounding attractions. Our unit was beautifully decorated with full amenities and a kitchen ready for hungry cooks. The location is perfect; close enough to venture out each day but secluded enough to feel rural. Our hosts Jean-Noel and Agathe could not have been more inviting and gracious. They welcomed la petite and helped us keep her entertained as she was the only child. We had a glorious week and hope to return soon. For more of our visit and photos please check out my blog at www.eugeniakeegan.com.

This Gite is disappointing and overpriced. Though the Gites are new, they are very small. Furthermore, the grounds of the property are very poorly maintained and the pool small, so do not let the photos fool you.  It is also important to note that the property is close to a waste disposal processing centre, which results in a smelly experience on occasion, and noisy rubbish trucks driving past.

Finally, as people have said in other reviews, no matter how much you clean the Gite after you leave, it is highly unlikely you will get your deposit back. You will also feel like you are on holiday with the landlords - it felt like we were being followed around half the time we were there, which was particularly frustrating when we were trying to relax by the pool.  You will have to deal with an awkward start when they try to sell you wine when you arrive.

If I were you, I would avoid this one.

Frankly, it is unfortunate that we need to respond (for a second time) to this couple who have little to do but write another negative review for the very same stay. They posted a review in October, waited for our response, noticed additional positive reviews on top of theirs and submitted this second negative one using another profile name with additional false accusations. A sad malicious posting on New Year’s Eve.

Facts: we charged this couple 30 euros out of 250 euros of their security deposit (the balance being returned) for the exceptional cleaning time we spent after their departure as stipulated in the terms and conditions signed by them and breached. But for this fact, we would not be dealing with a negative review let alone a second one by the same couple.

Unfortunately we run the risk receiving negative comments as soon as these kinds of charges are involved. Nevertheless, our terms and conditions are signed by all of our guests which include those who have posted 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor. Sadly, we get people like this reviewer and partner who turn the site into a “forum” for personal vendetta.

We will continue to run a business and service appreciated by a majority of kind and genuine guests including those returning for a fifth year in 2012!

Turning to this reviewer’s second posting…

Small gites? We think our our accommodations are fairly large measuring 90m2 (for 4 people), 110m2, (for 4-5 people) while the one bedroom unit where this couple stayed is 65m2 for 2 people. Hardly small. Nearly everyone arriving here comment on how the gites are larger and more beautiful than the pictures! And yet this reviewer also subjectively comments about the 2 larger gites they did not even see (other than pictures) or stay in.

Small pool? It is by no means Olympic size but a respectable 5x10 meters (as advertised) with a beautiful pool house. We are sorry this couple did not feel the desire to share it with others.

Rubbish trucks? Yes, even in the French country side, they do collect rubbish one to two times a week. Luckily, our taxes still go for this good service in France. It is ironic that this reviewer brings this issue up as they did not even have the courtesy to take their own rubbish out and put it in the bins we provide but instead left it to us to do and later claimed that it was not specified in the “terms and conditions”.

Waste disposal site? I think this reviewer is mistaken and is perhaps referring to a conversation we had with some other guests (were they eavesdropping?) concerning a regional protest against a planned site, 6km away. We are proud to say that the environmental/green movement which we are a part of has successfully blocked further plans for such a site in the French courts and we continue to hope our domaine and the surroundings will remain in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility set in the middle of vineyards and beautiful countryside.

In response to the reviews “no matter how much you clean the gite after you leave...” the truth speaks otherwise… Facts: dishwasher left running after their departure despite agreeing to empty it and clean it of food waste. Dishes and glasses put back dirty. Countertop, cooking range, dinning room table, coffee table left dirty. Food left in the refrigerator when it was agreed to be empty and clean. Un-separated rubbish left behind.

It is unfortunate this couple did not wish to try our wines. We are proud to have put together a list of wines after spending years of research, a selection of ones not available at the local stores. Just a small service without profit for people who appreciate “good” wine for a “good” price or may not be sure of what to choose from from the big selection at the local stores. It has been a great success with the majority of our guests and we will continue with this service out of our passion for wine!

We hope this reviewer and partner can reflect back on the true value, cleanliness and service we provided them during their stay and stop using fallacy simply out of anger and denial of breaching a signed contract.

This is our second visit to Domaine de Cure and found it once again - very welcoming, instantly relaxing, beautifully clean, well located with excellent facilities - a home from home. We look forward to our next stay!

We stayed as a couple with a child in spring 2011. The gite was nice, clean and well equipped. The hosts seem to be very kind and we enjoyed the time with them.

However an unnecessarily bad part of the story made us deciding to never come back: A deposit had been requested on arrival by Jean-Noel of about 250 EUR. Surprisingly and never experienced before and after, the deposit had not been paid back on departure.
Jean Noel told us that it would be paid back via bank transfer.

We left the gite in normal shape, as cleaning has been stated to be included in the price already. Diappointingly, Jean Noel decided that the kitchen had not been left in a manner that they expected - they needed more time for cleaning as usual, thus took some extra charge from the deposit and transferred the rest.

I contacted Jean Noel several times via e-mail, however he instisted to his opinion. Bad surprise and not competitive.

Despite our best efforts in providing a top quality accommodation and service to these guests, it is unfortunate when they resort to false accusations when the underlying problem lies with them.

We always risk receiving a negative review like this one when we are forced to charge someone for the mess they leave behind. It was made clear (as we do with all guests) before booking that we ask for a 250 euros security/damage deposit on arrival which we refund in full (minus any breakage/damage/”exceptional” cleaning) within 10 days of departure by bank transfer.

We were contacted again before receiving their confirmation of booking on what our cleaning policy was in which we replied: “The gite will be clean and proper when you arrive. We simply ask our guests to leave things “as when you arrived”, in particular the kitchen as we will not re-wash dishes, clean out the fridge, oven, microwave etc. after their use. We do not require our guests to “clean” the gite itself but we will not clean up after any “mess” or “careless overlook.”

After their departure, we explained the problems they left us in detail. Our message was:

“The dishwasher was running when you departed and we had to unload it for you. The pots and pans inside along with knives and other items needed to be re-washed… we had to re-wash and clean the kitchen drawers full of bread crumbs and grease; salad dryer put away with dry salad bits; cutting boards left dirty; glass pitcher with tea stains; greasy pans and their covers; inside of fridge; inside the oven; cooking knives; kitchen top, cooking hob, dirty sink; kitchen wall including tiles of grease; coffee maker, water kettle of grease. Empty the kitchen and bathroom rubbish you left behind.”

We also made clear to them that it was the additional 2 hours and 10 minutes spent doing all the above and not for the our first 2 hours we use to clean and prepare each gite.

The reviewer is certainly correct to say "the gite was nice, clean and well equipped" when they arrived. But it is far from the truth say “we left the gite in a normal shape”.

The gites at Domaine de Cure are located in a beautiful area, surrounded by vineyards however near enough to the supermarket and other towns not to feel to isolated. Whilst we had a wonderful time during our stay, sadly the email received from Jean-Noel on our return to the UK really did tarnish our memories of the whole trip.

As the reviewer below puts it rather kindly, the owners really do have very exacting standards with regard to cleaning. Jean-Noel's email contained the news that he would be taking part of our deposit to pay for the additional cleaning needed in the gite due to the "state" we left it in. If we had left the gite in a poor state then I would have accepted that he should retain some of the deposit but the fact is that we left it in a perfectly respectible state. The kitchen in particular was left clean and tidy as per the terms and conditions we had to sign on arrival however apparently this was not good enough. I am not sure what else, in the absence of actually cleaning the gite myself, we could have done. I agree with the reviewer below that if the owner expects the gite to be cleaned ready for the next arrivals then he should say so and either ask for money upfront or else provide the equipment needed to enable guests to do this.

Looking back on it perhaps we should not have been surprised - as soon as we arrived the owners went on about inconsiderate guests and complained about children (don't take your children there, they would not be welcome!) and kept referring to us as the young ones (we are 30!). He also had a tendancy to hover whilst we used the BBQ to remind us where the cleaning equipment was to clean it (ironically when we came to use it after they had it was dirty!!). I can completely appreciate that the owners have created a business for themselves and want to ensure that things are not ruined, however if you own self-catering gites then you also have to place some trust in your guests. We certainly will not be returning and I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone which is a shame. There are many other lovely gites in the area so I will be staying at one of these in future.

We are sorry that this couple was disappointed and we always run the risk of receiving a negative review like this one simply because we were required to enforce our Terms and Conditions (signed by them) which were breached.

We have successfully run our business of self-catering accommodations for 5 years and continue to have extremely satisfied guests (many of whom return year after year). All agree that asking to “leave the place as you found it” as normal.

Contrary to what this reviewer says, we welcome families with children (and we have many) but we certainly do not appreciate “adults” who cannot take responsibility for their actions.

This is a lovely holiday rental for those wanting to visit the Carcassonne and surrounding area. The gite is beautifully renovated, clean, very quiet and has all the facilities you need including an excellent bbq and relaxing pool area.

The owners are charming and very helpful, I would recommend taking advantage of their knowledge about local wine.

I couldn't decide whether to stay inside Le Cite or outside and I am so glad we chose this option as Le Cite itself can be very crowded even out of season and there are so many other lovely places to visit from this ideal location, eg we really enjoyed the shopping and restuarants in Toulouse. I would definitely recommend a sat nav for the hire car so you can take the scenic routes to visit places.

In terms of food shopping the Intermarche has everything you could want and the fresh produce (as you would expect) is amazing. The Bakery on the main road (near the bank) before you pull into the Intermarche is amazing, I had the best ham roll I have ever had there. We also had bread from the Intermarche which to be fair was also very good.

We will certainly be planning to go back again.

We are happy this couple enjoyed their stay and chose this option for their holiday. As the review points out, we are ideally located near but outside of Carcassonne offering our guests the peace and tranquility at the domaine but still the not far from the conveniences of what the region has to offer.

We eagerly await your return visit!
