“A room with a view”
Reviewed 25 October 2011

We stayed two nights in this hotel built into the cliffside and overlooking the Mediterranean. We had a standard room with a private bathroom. As people have previously stated, the standard rooms are small, very basic, but also very clean... and the stunningly gorgeous view is superlative ! We had a small balcony with two chairs and a table, plus there are also six beautiful terraces with lounging chairs for the guests to use, all of them overlooking the bay and the utterly charming village/town of Collioure which is a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel on a path along the littoral (WOW!). The buffet breakfast (cereal, juices, yogourt, bread, pastries, ham, cheese, coffee, tea) is served ouside if you wish and weather permits, or in the airy dining room with huge windows also overlooking the Mediterranean. We found the staff very helpful and welcoming. When we arrived, we were greeted by a young lady with a huge smile saying “Oh! I’m glad you’re here, I was beginning to worry…”. Upon check-out, we were told that we could leave our car in the Parking, no problem... The night watchman, also very helpful, recommended a restaurant for supper, and we loved it so much that we went back the second night !
We slept very, very well the first night (a Thursday with few people around), however on the second one, we were woken up by the people "next door", as they were chatting and laughing on their balcony at 1:00 AM... This is not to say that they were in any way "at fault", as they weren't being overly noisy, just enjoying the cool night on their balcony (undestandably so !)... but the rooms are so very close together and have no air conditioning so we closed our shutters, and left our windows open...
All in all, the room itself would probably only merit a three star (small, basic, no air conditioning...), but the extraordinary view, the awesome location, and the pleasant staff make it a truly magical place.

We booked this 2 star hotel as it seemed to have a good location with stunning views. We stayed here for eleven nights this September and these are my observations:
The room with ensuite was very very clean.
Our room had a little terrace with two chairs and a small table.(room 14)
The view was superb you can look towards Collioure or out to sea.
The breakfast was very good but a little pricey at 10 euros per person, however you could have a real feast and skip lunch!!
You could order wine and on many an afternoon we sat on one of the many beautiful terraces and ordered a bottle of lovely chilled rose wine at 15 euros a bottle.
The staff were lovely and friendly.
Reception was covered 24 hours a day but you can gain entrance around the back using a keypad. Good for when its 3am and you are a little bleary eyed !
Les Carranques is clean, basic, friendly and has some of the best views of any hotel.
It cost 110 euros a night which was expensive for a two star but it was far superior to other two star hotels in Collioure.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms in the middle because they have the best views. Ours was room 14 and the view was grea...

Prices have gone up a lot here - you now pay 10 euros a day for parking because you have too. The town is so crowded, you are relieved to pay to leave your car somehwere! The hotel still wins on its views. You can be quite happy sitting on the shady terraces all day looking at the town across the bay. Rooms are basic, but hey, you only need a place to sleep! You'll be too busy wandering around the pretty town, eating their fabulous fish!

We stayed here for a couple of nights in May 2010. We stayed in a room with share bathroom which we don't normally do but it was half the price of one with private bathroom, and we couldn't really justify paying twice for a bathroom. We were EXTREMELY happy with what we got. From what I saw there was only one other room that shared the bathroom anyway.

We could open the doors and look straight out into the amazing views. Breafast was nice, again with a beautiful view, however a little overpriced. The service of the staff wasn't that good... when we checked out we asked if we could leave our car in the carpark for the day or at least a couple of hours and the receptionist said no because the hotel carpark was fully booked for that night... we drove past later when we were leaving the town and there was only two cars there. Also it was a Friday so most people wouldn't have come until the evening anyway.

I don't think you can beat the price we paid... about 60 euro in peak season per night. This town is the most romantic place. I highly recommend it for romantic getaway. As long as you are fine sticking to yourselves and don't want to ask staff for any help for anything.

We paid a basic price and got a basic room. However with the views and the gardens around the hotel it was worth it. We will definately come back as Collioure is is one of the most beautiful places we have seen.

I echo every else's opinion------though to my mind it is just a typical sea-resort-town kind of place where the management figures you'll be so interested in the view that it isn't necessary to provide anything else whatsoever.

I wouldn't call the room uncomfortable, but to call it "basic" is the understatement of the year. It's particularly a let-down if the rest of your France holiday you've spent in places with character. The plastic furniture(what there is of it, which is practically nothing) is awful. The bathroom was good, with a spacious shower.

And it's beyond the pale that they just close the place up in the middle of the day and take off. So there you are with NO place to put the car; a recorded, difficult-to-understand message when you ring the bell; and a locked door so you can't even get into the lobby. Dreadful service.

As previously noted, parking is very, very difficult for a medium-size car in the teeny spaces.

But the views are unique, because of the way the hotel is built into the cliffside, with it's lovely little hidden terraces. I liked looking across the bay at the town, and the beautiful walk along the littoral.

I recommend it with reservations.

Perched up high above the rocks at the edge of the small town of Collioure, the best thing about this hotel is you get a wonderful view of the bay, castle, church and old town and out to the expanse of the Mediterranean. You can also relax on a variety of patios with comfy recliner chairs as you make your way down steps (only for guests) to the edge of the sea. The bedroom and balcony were both very small, the bathroom quite roomy. But this is of no concern as you've the view and it's open, pleasant and airy in the common areas where you can relax, have a cup of tea or breakfast. It's also very clean. The receptionist working most of the time during our stay could not have been friendlier and more helpful, despite being extremely busy. Expect lots of steps up and down to the street level and your room and a five to ten minute walk down to the town itself. Being away from the centre also means quiet and calm. We didn't have a car but I heard that this was an added expense and was a little difficult for guests. However, Les Caranques was a great place for us to have a holiday break, Collioure is a lovely town and I would highly recommend you consider staying here as long as walking short distances isn't a problem.

I booked Les Caranques because my parents used to stay there years ago, and loved it so much. I've read that they've changed hands and upped the prices. I was really astonished at how basic the rooms were. Not even soap was provided! The only thing they provided in the way of toiletries was some sachets of shower gel. The artwork on the walls has been there since the 80s and is faded. There are a couple of plastic IKEA chairs in the room. The bedside tables are also white laminate IKEA type. The lightbulb in the bathroom is so dim you can barely see to brush your teeth. On the plus side: the view is amazing, the bed was remarkably comfortable, the water pressure in the shower was great. But we paid more for this hotel than a luxury place in Barcelona which had Internet, TV, minibar, AC, hairdryer, 24-hour staff, rooftop terrace, etc. I don't get the high prices here at all, they are really unwarranted. I would recommend you shop around or try to negotiate. AND they charge you 15 euros for parking, and 15 euros each for breakfast on top of the room charge! Nuts...
