“Sans Pareil Casa Païral”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

First of all, know that you're staying in Catalonia, not France and not Spain. Secondly, getting to the hotel is not difficult but it is tricky. Here's how you do it.
Coming down the hill into Collioure with the seaside on your right, you will see, at the bottom of the incline and on your right hand two o' clock position, Le Frégate hotel and restaurant. Once you've spotted this, look immediately to your left and you will spot an alley, in between two brasseries, that goes down to the dead end that is the Spanish style front of the Casa Païral. You will need to swing wide to make that turn and once you've gone down, you can only back up out again. That's fun if you like barging into the traffic like a drunken elephant having a love affair with a Marula tree, still, anything to aid the colonic digestion.
If you miss the turn, which you probably will, turn around somehow, up the road, and come back past the self same turn and enter the small municipal car park on the right just after the hotel. The establishment's own car park's entrance is from a boom directly off this public car park. Yu can double park while one of your number legs it into the hotel and gets the code for the boom.
Once you are established in your room it will all become tranquil and worthwhile. The place is an oasis of quiet in the touristified maelstrom that is Collioure in August. It's not cheap and the rooms do not represent great luxury for the money by northern European standards but this is the French beach where all the great French artists congregated to pay homage to Salvador Dali, too scared as they were to cross into Spain lest they die of typhus or be carried off as slaves to Tangier.
It's the place to stay in town!
I would only comment that, in common with many places, the towels, which spotless and abundant, were of the harsher type of material. A little more fluff would have been appreciated.
Ice cream fanatics will have a field day in town but don't stop at the first or second place you find on your walk down to the sea. Proceed along the walkway until the second or third turn on the left and work your way to the corner stall, on the four way pedestrian junction, where the best food of paradise is to be found.

Room Tip: The hotel is not cheap in price but the suite with its enormous verandah was splendid and provided a...

Although this hotel is difficult to find by car, it has an excellent location. There are two restaurants located right outside the entrance that serve a wonderful breakfast. So it is not necessary to pay for the expensive buffet breakfast that the hotel offers.

The courtyard is very beautiful. There are plenty shady spots to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. There is a pool. We did not use it because the water level looked very low.

The only problem we had with this hotel was the bathroom. The sink and shower were located in the hotel room. The toilet was in a very very small closet/room. A large person would not be able to fit in that room. There was a curtain that you could pull all the way around the sink and shower to give some privacy. The shower had no door. So it was difficult to contain any water that leaked out into just the bathroom. The curtain looked like a triage room in a hospital emergency room. The area was large enough to be enclosed with walls. So the curtain made no sense to us. We were told by management that this is how the owner chose to finish the bathroom.

So if you are a large person or a person that needs some privacy be sure you don't get this room.

What a gem! Great location right in the heart of Collioure, only a few minutes' walk to the beach. The hotel is not on the main street, but rather, set back about 75 metres down a lane (see photo). I can see why people drive past it, as the nearest road is quite congested with pedestrians. The parking is also not easy to find. To locate the entrance to the car park, drive past the hotel going south on Rue de la Republique, and take the first right into Rue du Jardin Navarro - you'll think you're driving into a council car park (see photo). The entrance to the Casa Paraïl carpark is a white boom gate off the right of this lane - it is marked with the hotel name (see photo). You'll have to go and get staff to let you in - you can walk through the carpark via the pool to the reception. And if you're driving to Collioure, ensure that you have parking as the town is thronged with tourists.

The hotel has a lovely courtyard with a magnificent old magnolia grandiflora tree. The breakfast room opens out into the garden, giving one the option of dining in or outside. Many rooms look out onto the courtyard - I imagine this would be nicer than looking externally. We stayed in the old house, on the second floor, however, the first floor rooms have higher ceilings and a nicer outlook. We were upgraded from our original room, as there had been smokers in it, and we'd specifically requested a non-smoking room. The staff at the hotel were helpful and friendly, no problems in this regard at all. There's also a pool that we didn't use, as we preferred to swim at the beach.

The hotel is in a great location: not only minutes to the small beach, but also the chateau, the church and restaurants. It's in the centre of the village, but due to its location behind a row of buildings, it's quiet.

A beautiful tranquil hotel. So close to the busy seaside resort but perfectly quiet in the lovely garden and with a lovely swimming pool. We had a ground floor room opening on to the garden which was very nicely furnished with a beautiful en suite. It was a little dark inside the room which I might have had a problem with if I was there for a week but for one night it was just perfect. o Excellent staff who were helpful at all times.

We really liked to stay at this hotel. Charming, friendly staff and a good atmosphere. However we spent only one night since it was extremely expensive for a family of five. And another issue is that it is a tranquillity resort, which made you almost feel some sort of a bad guy if your children were a little too noisy. Good breakfast, but expensive, the same with parking(17€). Probably the perfect holiday city and hotel for adults 50+

My daughters and I had a great stay at the Casa Pairal. Beautiful grounds. Good breakfast buffet. Nice room. Nice staff. Quiet. Good location near restaurants, the beach, the castle, and the church. Collioure has a great market on Wednesday practically next to the hotel.

We stayed one night in le relais de trois mas and one night here, just so we could take advantage of the view from le relais. The view from le relais is unbeatable but casa pairal has every hotel in town beat. It is clean, charming and very nice staff. We had a great stay.
