“Authentic old France meets stylish modern”

We walked straight past this recently refurbished mansion, down a side street in Montpellier - it's really an incognito 250 year old guest house. Inside is another story. From the inner courtyard onwards, it's the most romantic place, very private and totally unique.
We stayed in the Flamants Roses room, (Pink Flamingos) and it inspired us to go and find them in the Camargue for real when we left. In hindsight we would have upgraded to a larger room as, after having a snoop (we had permission as everyone else had checked out!) and despite loving our room, the other 4 were very special.
We were there in the height of summer, but I wonder how warm it is in winter, with flagstone floors, mile tall windows and ceilings of giddy heights.

We stayed 5 nights in the Orchidees suite, in the heart of the ancient centre of lovely Montpellier. The suite has a very large tastefully decorated room with a small additional room with desk, sofa and bookcase. The main room has a large double bed (very comfortable), aircon, a flat screen TV and wifi. The shower is a modern installation behind a partition within the main room, but very well incorporated into the room: a stylish gallic mixture of old and ultra-modern. Alain de Bordas, the owner, was a perfect host, taking time to help us plan our time in the city with careful recommendations about museums, galleries and restaurants. He also made bookings for us on request, including to the violin-maker's workshop, to see a very successful luthier in action - a fascinating treat. The hotel is in the pedestrian zone, which means that taxis do not seem to like going there, except by special arrangement. This can be a little inconvenient for people like us who have too much luggage, since there is no alternative but to wheel the luggage yourself from the Prefecture on Rue Foch to the hotel, a distance of about 100m or so; however, this was no great hardship provided your luggage has wheels! The pedestrian zone does not exclude scooters and motorbikes, which can be a little noisy at times in the very narrow streets outside the hotel, but generally things became very quiet after 11pm and until morning, so we always slept well. Alain offers breakfast as an option at 15 euros per person. Whilst we appreciated the convenience of this, we did not feel the food represented good value at this price: it is a fairly normal French breakfast of bread and pastries, with juice, yoghourt and a small bowl of diced fruit. Pleasant enough, but quite expensive we felt. However, we did have the choice. In terms of Alain's recommended restaurants we were completely overwhelmed by the nearby Tamarillos which is a superb gastronomic treat. Le Maison de la Losere was very good, but not as good as Tamarillos. Le petit jardin was also good, but not quite at the level of the previous places mentioned and Morceau de Lune was nothing special - it seemed to be trying to offer unusual dishes which did not quite live up to their pretensions. For lunch we were impressed by Comptoir de l'Arc - excellent food, informal atmosphere and lovely setting on a sunny day.
Other tips: The zoo and its extensive park is a lovely day out; we recommend the amazon experience as well as the external attractions. The restaurant is also good! It is easy to get there by tram T1 to St Eloi and then transfer to the nearby shuttle bus "La Navette"
If arriving by train in Montpellier, be aware that taxis cannot stop outside the station - it is a 50m walk down the road; also, due to ongoing tramway/roadworks, the traffic jams around the central area can be horrendous, so allow plenty of time for fairly short journeys!
Overall we were delighted with this hotel and our stay in Montpellier: it is a beautiful and very civilized treat!

Room Tip: We liked Orchidees (1st floor)

My wife and I really enjoyed this "hotel". Simple and grand at the same time. Oozing history without trying, a rare opportunity to stay in a place relatively untouched by time, but with enough luxury make it a totally wonderful experience. Alain, the host is extremely helpful and knowledgeable, especially given that the building has been in his family for generations. We stayed in one of the the larger rooms (originally the music room of the grand house) - delicate but necessary additions done in very chic minimalistic style, complementing the 1700's aesthetics perfectly, and without irreversible impact (apparently credit goes to Alain's wife for all the design work).
Really recommended for a relaxed and inspirational base for exploring beautiful Monpellier.

We stayed at the Baudon de Mauny for two days at the beginning of our holiday in the Languedoc region and in the days after we often wished we were back there. The attention to (design) detail is amazing with a very clever mix of old and new and no sacificing of comfort just to acheive a look. As noted by other reviewers, the owner, Alain, is very helpful and goes out of his way to make sure you enjoy Montpellier - as a result of his recommendations we ate in the best restaurant of our holiday (La Maison de la Lozere) and we saw the most interesting art exhibition we have seen for a long time (Odilon Redon). A perfect haven for anyone looking for charm and individuality.

We were a family of 7 and with very varied tastes. Alain made sure we were made comfortable and catered to all possible requests. The rooms are just fabulous. The property is a great 17th century building. The location is very central and everything is very accessible. While we were not able to try all of Alains suggestions...but we are definitely going to go back and try some of those.

Just one thing: The ironing service was bad (In fact we gave the same three shirts twice and we got it back just the same way: unironed), but we let go because we really liked the effort put in by both Alain and Danna. Ofcourse this feedback has been left with Alain.

A very special place to stay in Montpellier. The combination of old world and contemporary is carried out with taste and style. The room we stayed in (Gypseries) was peaceful and charming - original plasterwork, stone floors and spectacularly large windows make this a room we want to return to. This is like staying in living history with all mod cons included. Alain is fantastic and helpful - his service is discreet and his recommendations welcomed. This might not be a place for everyone - if you want 24 hour room service and the usual 5 star hotel accompaniments then look elsewhere. If you want a romantic hideaway that leaves you with a feeling that you have lived for a while in Montpellier (and lived well!) then this might be just what you are looking for.

I have just returned home after spending 6 nights at Baudon de Mauny in Montpellier. My daughter and I were studying French at a local college for a week and Baudon was the perfect location as it is in the heart of the charming old city.
Baudon is a wonderful 18th century building with wonderful proportions and beautiful original details. The owners have refurbished the spaces beautifully with contemporary pieces which work very well together.
The standard of our room and bathroom was excellent, very comfortable beds, stone floors, great soft lighting. Excellent shower and bath. Very good and quiet air conditioning in all the rooms.
I spent many hours in the very comfortable communal lounge and breakfast space trying to learn my french verbs.
Breakfast served with linen napkins and silver teapots with charming service
The standard of the housekeeping is very high, our rooms were always very well serviced every day.
Alain the owner could not have been more helpful with advice about restaurant reservations or any other requests we had.
Baudon provided a very special and unique bolt hole from the hustle and bustle of Montpellier

Room Tip: We enjoyed our stay in The Gypseries. If you like taking baths this is the only room with a bath an...
