Owner description: The Tour Magne, i.e. the Great Tower, is the only tower left standing from the Roman city walls. The top of the tower of 140 steps provides a striking panoramic view of Nimes.

“If you have time on a nice clear day”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2014

11.5E pp gets you a triple ticket good over 3 days for admission to the Amphitheater, Tour Magne and Maison Carree. A bit of a slog to get to the tower from the gardens below, then another 100+ steps to the top. Well, that's good exercise anyway. They have a few interesting placards in the bottom part in French and English to give you some background of the tower from Roman times to modern day. The view from the top is nice but the viewing platform is very small and becomes crowded very quickly. Only bother with this if you have lots of time in Nimes AND a nice, clear day.

“Worth the effort!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2014

The Great Tower is a partially ruined ancient Roman watchtower located in the Jardins de la Fontaine. We walked to the gardens from the train station, climbed up the hill where the tower is located, then climbed up to the top of the tower! It was quite a workout. The spiral stairs up and down the tower are narrow but easy to climb. At the top there is room for several people at most, and you get about a 180 degree view of the city. We were lucky that it was a clear, sunny day and the view was amazing. There was only one other couple up there with us, so we were able to spend a fair bit of time at the top, enjoying the view and the breeze.

“Obvious but magnificent views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2013

The walk through the gardens and up towards the tower are not as daunting as it may at first appear. You can't quite see it from the bottom where you're heading but there are signs. Not always clear, but they're there. There are some fab shady spots and a picnic area before the summit.
As I walked through the trees, I saw a group who'd met to recite poetry.
The tower itself has a spiral staircase which isn't too bad a climb. I was fascinated with some of the really old pencil grafitti!
I spent quite a while at the top taking panoramas and trying to spot other places of interest. It was a beautiful day so clear views all around. Take water!

“Nice setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 October 2013

The tower overlooks the entire city and gives an idea of the scale of the long gone fortifications that it was a part of. It's a shame that the interior was gutted as it is just a shell now. The views from the top are good but it's difficult to spot even the amphitheatre with all the taller modern developments. Good exercise climbing to the top though :)

“Great view”

This is a must when you are in the Jardins de la Fontaine.

But prepare yourself for a long and time consuming row in the tourist season while only a few people can be at the top in moment.
