“A Great Hotel Alternative”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 September 2012

We arrived so much later than we had thought and Amelie was still there waiting for us, cheerful and helpful. Our two bedroom apartment on the ground floor was huge, clean, quiet, and comfortable. The kitchen was very usable even if not equipped to prepare a gourment meal - a nice change from eating at restaurants day after day.

On its website, the chateau was described as ‘luxury’ accommodation in a ‘boutique’ hotel. Pros included the beautiful house and grounds, access to a swimming pool and private parking. Also, the receptionist was very helpful and gave us lots of suggestions for things to do locally. We heeded her advice and took day trips to Castelnou and Collioure, both of which were enchanting.

Overall, however, I was disappointed. Our accommodation was less luxury, more average; less a hotel, more a group of self-catering apartments. Our room was OK but it was not the luxurious space I’d expected. The bed took up most of the room; the 'sumptuous drapery' and bedclothes were pretty basic; a rolling door separated the bedroom and bathroom; and the room didn't feel entirely clean (an old cotton bud and several strands of hair lay on the floor by the bed, while the remnants of what looked like a noodle dinner were encrusted on the wall). The rugs also looked like they would benefit from a good shake.

Despite claiming to be a hotel, the towels and bedding were not changed during our stay and there was nowhere to dry said towels between each usage (the towel rail provided was not big enough). Also, the coffee in the kitchen was stale, the communal salon was inaccessible for most of our stay due to part of the ceiling falling in, and we couldn't find the DVD library we supposedly had access to.

The area surrounding the chateau was quite run-down and I would not have felt safe walking back there alone at night. There's a reason they provide a private car park and have spike-topped gates... We also had trouble finding the place, despite using the directions on the website. Perpignan itself was nice enough but its proximity to the beach and mountains are its main selling points.

I booked our stay at the chateau based on the fantastic reviews on Trip Advisor (which rates it as the best hotel in Perpignan). On returning home I have since read several scathing reviews and have to say, I wish I’d read those before making my booking. Perhaps my expectations were too high but the Chateau was less impressive than the rural B&B we had previously stayed at. And the Chateau was twice the price.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Champagne room on the ground floor. Bathroom was nice, but not a lot of space in be...

This is a beautiful hotel/apartment (don't really know how to describe it - it has the presence of a hotel but provides the benefits of a self-catering apartment - it's actually the best of both worlds!) in really lovely grounds with a fantastic pool area as well as some shady corners to sit or eat.
The rooms are huge with high ceilings and are well decorated. The staff and owners are very attentive and helpful when required but remain unobtrusive.
Perpignan itself is a lovely city with plenty options for activities and for eating out. The chateau is about a 15 minute walk to the city and it is obvioulsy not in the nicest part of the city however, once you enter the gates
and get into the lovely grounds you forget you are in a city altogether!
I believe some of the rooms and apartments have airco but ours didn't - it would have benefitted from this as it was very very hot through the nights.
We stayed for 9 nights and had a very positive experience staying here - it is quite expensive but overall it's worth it. One minor point would be that for the daily rates charged I would expect cleaning to be included on a daily basis (like a hotel) rather than weekly (like a self-catering).
Overall, a great find and would love to return.

Room Tip: Our family of 4 stayed in the 2 bedroom classic french apartment as we wanted to have a door directl...

We loved it so much that we added 2 extra days. Great host who made us feel totally at home. Clean and spacious apartment, everything we needed. No fuss laundry service. Good balance between hospitality and privacy. Highly recommended.

The hotel was excellent. It is a beautiful old building which had aristocratic charm despite being in a not particularly glamorous area of the city (I'd have loved to see it a century ago when it undoubtedly had a bigger garden and was not surrounded by newer buildings!). Everywhere was spotless, and the staff were charming and very helpful. The garden and super swimming pool were huge bonuses in the hot weather and were the reason we chose the hotel. It is a little walk out of the town centre - 15 minutes max - which didn't bother us but might be too far for some. Breakfast was offered as an optional extra but the hotel offered very good self catering facilities with a full kitchen complete with dishwasher. There is a Carrefour and a boulangerie nearby so self catering was easy. It would be great for people with children as the owner has a vast collection of DVDs for hire and a large TV in the reception area of the apartment. so families could cook in-house and wouldn't need to go out in the evening.
Along with the kitchen area and our en suite bedroom with Juliet balcony there was a large reception/seating area (with a dining table) and a terrace which we also shared (french doors from the other bedroom opened on to the terrace). We were in a de-luxe room which meant that although we had our own en-suite bedroom, naturally, we shared the rest of the facilities with one other room. This would be terrific for a family or friends travelling together, but is a bit odd for strangers as it feels a bit like a flat share with strangers. We felt we had to tiptoe around to make morning tea in case we woke the occupants of the other room. However, I'm sure it isn't a problem generally.
Overall, this was a lovely hotel with oodles of character, and an oasis of calm in a hot city.

We will cetainly return to Chateau La Tour Apollinaire. The standard of accomodation is excellent, the gardens and pool are attractive and relaxing. We stayed in the tower itself. It has a generous sized kitchen and large living area, then up the stairs to an amazing bedroom with views over the City and the Pyrenees! The staff were friendly and very attentive, sorting out small issues unrelated to the hotel (like repairing specs and suitcases!). It was our first time in this part of France and they also gave some great tips for days out etc. If you dont want to self cater, it's about a 10minute walk into town where there is a large range of restaurants to choose from. We would certainly advise having a car to be able to see all the places in the locality.

La Tour Apollinaire is full of pleasant surprises. When you weave through the rather plain and modern neighbourhood of apartment buildings you can't believe that a real chateau is hidden there. But open the gates and your greeted with a fine old property lovingly restored and cared for. The gardens and pool are beautiful but the rooms are even better. More like private spacious apartments with excellent shared kitchen facilities all set into this magnificent stone and brick character building. It feels like staying in a friend's (or your own!) special luxury hideaway. The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly and the secure parking on the grounds was another bonus. Highly recommended!
