“Writer's Retreat”

I love Uzès.
Alexander's house is perfect when you need a place to concentrate, review, reflect and relax. A writer's retreat.
The four story house is comfortable, well appointed, and affordable, as well as being centrally located. Just around the corner is the perfect café for breakfast, and as the day wears on there are countless other restaurants to satisfy both thirst and hunger admirably. Around a further corner is the wonderful new hotel La Maison d'Uzès, with day spa services available if you feel like treating yourself. I did, and I spent a great afternoon going from steam, to plunge pool, to shower and back again. (There is a whole list of spa services available, but they were not in my travel budget.) The spa is housed beneath the hotel in a grotto; dug right into the stone foundation, with vaulted ceilings and calm lighting. The hotel's restaurant is said to be top notch, but I was not able to sample their fare on this trip.
The loggia in Alexander's house is a wonderful room at the top, with floor to ceiling windows that open wide to reveal views over the rooftops to the Duke's Palace. Sitting there with a glass of wine in the afternoon, sun streaming in, with just a faint indication of village life nearby, is a moment I will not soon forget.
To be able to be in an environment like Uzès, with the medieval setting, the fantastic vistas, and then to return to a comfortable home that feels safe, secure, and as though you are part of the place, means a lot. I found this at Alexander's house.
For those of us travelling on a budget, to find a place as nice as this, in such a good location, with complete privacy, is a "find" indeed.
Would I recommend this place to a good friend? Absolutely!

“An idiosyncratic blend of the aesthetic and the ascetic: a tale of a loggia in Uzés”

There is so much that is truly heinous in the world that I feel obliged – indeed, it’s become a necessity – to surround myself with as much beauty as is humanly possible. A piece of glassware, an artwork, some finely tooled shoes: the list is, needless to say, endless. Which is what brought me to Uzés of course: its historic streetscapes are exactly what I love – and find most beautiful – about Europe. All those aged buildings with their wooden window shutters: just beautiful.

But while my tastes aspire to the queenly, my budget rarely is. Indeed, my purse is more that of a lady’s maid than an aristocrat (i am aspirational if nothing else). So i will admit that what first attracted about this loggia was the fact it was on 4 floors. Four floors! My mind went crazy with the endless possibilities. Naturally, i assumed it would be palatial. Naturally, given the age and the location of the building, it was not. Which was ok, i can do cosy, i can even do stairs, although i will admit that after 2 weeks the novelty of the stairs had really worn off.

As an urban wayfarer with a penchant for the eclectic and the beautiful, the decor was satisfying on a number of levels. i really appreciated the quality bed linen and pillows, the comfortable sofa in the living area and the artworks and prints scattered throughout. The lack of somewhere to hang my clothes was a problem and all that was on offer were hangers on the staircase. Fine for all those adaptable little camper folk, but I am definitely not of this ilk. A wardrobe, thank you, would be nice.

The bathroom was perhaps a tad too much monastic for my taste. A simple shower on the ground floor which was always cold, despite the heating. And dark. With the exposed stone walls, it felt like I was showering in a cave. And about as warm as one.

Communication with the owner was also excellent and he went out of his way to resolve any issues we had. It is so rare to find a holiday rental that exudes both style and finesse, while also providing good value. Recommended.

“Visit Uzes and stay here!”

Our stay in Uzès was our favorite out of our whole trip to France and Alexander's apartment was perfect! It was so fun to be staying within the city walls and in such a quaint building with its views of the other roof tops. Alexander was helpful, easy to work with and quick to respond. The map provided by Alexander was most helpful as it helped us discover a restaurant we frequented each night, Les Terroirs. He also guided us to the market on Wednesday morning, where we purchased probably the best olives, cheese and meats we ate during our visit.
We highly recommend staying here!

Management Response
28 Mar 2017
I have only very rarely had negative experiences renting out my property, but this one instance was unfortunate. Both the electricity and the TV were in fact working, only the guest seems to have been unable to operate them. This guest also managed to loose the keys to the house: Instead of calling me for assistance, she called a locksmith and changed the locks, without informing me until after the fact and without my acceptance. Her explanation was that she was late for her train, which she in fact missed. I suspect the extra expense of a new train ticket and a locksmith - both entirely her own responsibility - explains her lukewarm and, in my opinion, unfair review.
