Fine and attentive service from the lady of the establishment and modern light french cuisine in a nicely decorated small dining room all made for an enjoyable evening. In line with this type of restaurant the servings are small but not itsy-bitsy, thankfully.

This restaurant was exactly what we needed on our visit to Nancy. The service is friendly and discreet. The restaurant is small but it did not feel crowded. At least on a Saturday evening you have to chose a meny and we thought that the price-quality was accurate. It is true that the food is not innovative; you will not find combinations of food that you have not seen before on your plate. But what you get is very nice classical food, made with care and love and passion and good ingredients, and we appreciated that very much. The choice is not huge, but it also means that the kitchen can put all their energy in what they make. We also appreciated that the wine list is adapted to the size of the restaurant (as the restaurant is small, mostly couples come here). It meant that they had a lot of half bottles of wine and also enough of interesting whites and reds per glass to chose from. The only thing we would object to was that if you eat everything it is easily too much food. But it is more a problem for us too chose what we eat; next time we will not eat bread and leave more on the plate. Even if it is hard.

The food here was superb. We three took the 31 euro menu ad thought the food excellent but expensive. Our bill came to 182 euros (in addition to the menu we had a glass of champagne each and a bottle of Chablis between us). The food could be described as 'nouvelle cousine' - portions were not large but beautifully presented and sufficient for each. Not a lot of choice but with this size of restaurant understandably so.

Our dinner at Le V-Four was simply outstanding. This tiny yet elegant restaurant is tucked away on a narrow street in the old part of the city, a block away from St. Epvres. For foodies like us, the restaurant was a real treat, with gorgeous presentation and wonderful flavors. We selected the 41 euro menu, and none of the courses disappointed, although it was kinda funny that every course came with a little glass of soup or mousse as though the chef was so in love with the concept that he/she couldn't do otherwise. All the food starts with classic French ingredients -- foie gras, for example -- and makes them into distinctive, delicious works-of-art. For example, the aforementioned fois gras arrived pressed into a rectangular block, topped with a red fruit gelée (my French wasn't good enough to understand what the topping was) and a tiny glass of foie gras mousse. Service was impeccable and gracious. Since the restaurant seats only 18 (or stretching it, 20), Le V-Four is probably a must-reserve restaurant. Our first choice of nights was booked, although we then were able to inquire about availability that same night -- and got a table. Only nine of us dined there that night. Le V-Four does not have an a la carte menu, and you must select one of price levels. Although the least expensive version (32 euros, maybe) didn't offer a choice within the appetizers (escargots only), most courses allow guests to choose one of two items. With a restaurant this small, the menu is limited. Check out the menu before you reserve to make sure everyone in your party will like what's offered. One table was dressed very casually, and the other two, us included, were more dressed up with informal dresses/skirts and jackets (no tie). Credit cards accepted.

The previous evening my daughter and I had been to La Gentilhommiere, also in Nancy, and we both preferred that to Le V-four. Not that there was anything wrong with the place. The atmosphere is more formal and, while infinite care had gone into the preparation of the dishes, they simply didn't wow us in the same way. My daughter went for the €31 and I for the €41 menu. The restaurant seats just 18, so it is advisable to reserve.
