Metz offers a large number of attractions - most importantly the beautiful Gothic Saint Etienne Cathedral (St Etienne=St Stephen). The cathedral - construction began in the 13th century upon a 5th century site - has one of the tallest naves in the world. The stained glass windows are very beautiful - and the modern windows by Chagall and Villon blend perfectly with the original 14th century windows.
Even in the high tourist season the cathedral offers a place of quietude and tranquility. Access to the vault and the treasury cost a small fee.
