“not much to see”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

Worth visiting for its history but not much to see. The whole trench covered by a low concrete roof with a couple of memorial crosses.

“A Definite "Must See" but it needs care”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

If you visit Verdun, you should make the stop here. I rate it a 4 of 5 because the French government needs to take better care of the site. For those who doubt the gun/bayonet story, go to the Douaumont Ossuary; go downstairs to the gift shop. Near the back of the shop is a row of stereoscopes that use the old 3D/double image viewing. Lots of great pictures from during and after the war. About the fourth one (left to right) had pictures of the early memorial, and it shows the gun barrels with bayonets on them.

“Interesting, no critical”
Reviewed 14 February 2014

There a monument to the fallen soldiers, found buried in a trench allegedly with their bayonets rising about the earth all in a row. That seems to be contested today; perhaps an urban myth? But there is a an open air building shielding the trench site (no bayonets to be seen). There was a big crack in the entry facade that gives the place a big of a woebegone look. You walk in, take a look..and leave. I guess it was worth doing. But there are so many more interesting things to spend you time on. If you are a little short on time, skip this and concentrate on the old forts and trenches.

“Walk a bit further”
Reviewed 11 January 2014

This monument is a must see. Along side of the road it's easily possible you miss it driving by. When you do go in, most people walk up to the memorial buildilng and back. Yet... walk a little further.

Pass the monument and over the hill, you can walk down into the foresty battlefield. Craters clearly visible it reminds you the harshness of warfare more than a concrete memorial.

“Impressive”
Reviewed 12 November 2013

We visited this site on a cold windy November morning without any other visitors around, which makes the story of the men who were burried alive even more chilling. May they rest in peace.
