Reviewed 23 October 2013

one night stay before heading back to australia. fantastic location on the main square, with much to do in surrounding streets - bars, cafes, eateries and short walk to river and the main station. i booked very late, so only one room remained, which was quite pricey, but really quirky and spacious -- fabulous bathroom, nice outlook, a bottle of red and some fruit, and v comfortable bed. staff were very helpful, particularly when we arrived by car, it is not in a part of town easily accessible by private vehicle, as most surrounding streets are walking plazas only. very quiet and most enjoyable. for the elderly, there is no elevator in parts of the hotel, so best to check room location, as its a sprawling old property. would definitely stay again if returned to toulouse!

Room Tip: rooms at the rear building are away from the square and very quiet.

We stayed here for three nights and had originally booked a standard room but it was very small so we upgraded to a larger one at 40 euro per night extra - this did not include breakfast. On the plus side, the rooms are dramatic and luxurious with lovely bathrooms. However the building is so old we could hear every creak and footstep in the rooms above us and it was quite disturbing. The location is great in the heart of the city and beside a very good bistro with lots of choice in eating places around the square. It was a lovely hotel for a special occasion but I don't think I would return - too expensive. Toulouse itself is a great place to visit.

Room Tip: You definitely need to pay extra for a decent room

I stayed here for just one night while visiting southwestern France. I would have liked to have stayed longer. The rooms are a good size and very comfortable. WiFi is complimentary throughout the hotel. The location, right on a large pedestrian square, couldn't be better! Breakfast featured smoked salmon! I highly recommend this property.

We spent four nights at the Grand Hôtel de l'Opéra in September 2013. We booked at the last minute so got a very good rate of approx. GBP 80 / USD 130 / EUR 95 per night.

The hotel has a fantastic location, directly on the Place du Capitole, Toulouse’s central square, adjacent to both the main shopping district and the quaint narrow streets of the old town.
The hotel’s decor is somewhat dated and in need of a general refurb; that said, it was clean, the room (and bed) were comfortable and the staff were universally friendly and helpful. For what we paid, we have no complaints.

Important tips for those driving to the hotel:

The hotel has no car park but that’s little problem because there is a large, multi-level, underground car park under the Place du Capitole, directly in front of the hotel. We understand the hotel offers a valet parking service but we did not use it; those with heavy bags may wish to consider this because the car park elevator does not come up to street level, leaving a final set of stairs to cope with. The car park costs EUR 19 per day (indeed, any stay between 7 and 24 hours costs EUR 19) – not cheap, but for the convenience we decided it was worth it.

Another reviewer stated that the hotel was almost impossible to find and I know why. The centre of Toulouse is a maze of ancient, narrow, semi-pedestrianised streets, most of which are one-way only. If I didn’t have a sat nav in the car I think I’d still be driving around them now; even the sat nav tried to take me down impassibly narrow or no-entry streets on several occasions. When I finally reached the address on the car park operator’s website, that turned out to be the exit to the car park with the entrance on the other side of the square – entailing a further 15 minute drive around the one way system. Best advice: program your sat nav for the junction of Place du Capitole and Rue du Poids de l’Huile as that’s where the car park entrance is. Beware of the sat nav taking you the wrong way down one way streets as you get nearby, follow instead signs for Parking Capitole.

Room Tip: Whilst rooms at the front have a view over the Place du Capitole, that can be very noisy late into t...

The Grand Hotel de l'Opera is located at the main plaza and is in easy walking distance of everything you want to see in Toulouse except for the Air and Space Museum but this was no problem becuase with have the Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. The room we had was more like a suite with a king size bed, an ample seating area, a separate area for desk and chair, and a bright clean bathroom but with a high bathub wall that made getting in and out a problem. This 4-5 star hotel has slippers and bathrobes for its guests. There is a flat screen TV but with programs only in French. The air conditioning worked well, The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast at the hotel is expensive but just go out to the plaza, cross to the left and there are cafes that serve cafe au lait, a croissant, a local bread, buerre et confiture, and freshly squeezed orange juice for 6 euros. Good restaurants are nearby. The hotel has a nice looking restaurant but we did not eat there. If you are travelling by train, there is a metro stop about 50 meters away that goes directly to the train station. I would stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask to look at the assigned room

French provincial cities struggle to provide really high quality hotels but Toulouse stands out with Grand Hotel de l'Opera. It is expensive but it is worth the extra to stay in a genuine four star hotel full of classic charm. Treat yourself!
