“Great contemporary art space”
Reviewed 29 June 2013

Excellent conversion of lovely old industrial buildings (the cattle market and slaughterhouse) now housing an interesting collection of 20c French art and changing visiting exhibitions. The current exhibition of Tony Smith sculpture, architecture and painting is very well displayed and looks wonderful in the huge brick halls.

“Not Worth the Visit”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

In order to reach this museum on foot one has to walk for a good half hour if one is staying in downtown Toulouse and it is really not worth the time or the effort. The only thing we saw that was of any interest was a children's carrousel in the park that was adjacent to the museum. The children could choose to ride a huge turtle, a rather frightening beetle, a unicorn etc.

“Perhaps not really fair since it was partly shut. But...”
Reviewed 3 October 2012

There wasn't much happening as they seemed to be renovating, and I guess it might have been more fun here if more had been happening. I am sorry to say I found this place boring. There was a cafe that looked as if it could have been nice, but we were not really hungry. Other than this, there was no life. They could have had so much going on outside the actual buildings, , but instead there was a lot of blankness. . When you see how fun the Palais de Tokyo in Paris manages to be, you can't help feeling this place is a wasted opportunity. It really ought to be full of people. But, perhaps it's better when there are more exhibitions on.

The surrounding area, incidentally, is what is known as "up and coming" and there were quite a few homeless people although it felt scruffy rather than threatening. I got tired of being approached by troubled individuals with dogs who wanted money. I visited when the shops were closed, though, and some of them looked as if they could have been interesting and funky.

“Unimaginative, dead, what a disappointment”
Reviewed 23 September 2012

The abattoirs arts centre is undergoing repairs and only had one exhibition on. - of an artist who takes humself very seriously obviously) We got in free. I'm prepared to believe it's better when fully operational. But the humourless incomprehensible art work, bleak and uninviting acres of dead space around the buildings, the prim shop and the absolute deafness of the surrounding area on a Sunday (apart from panhandlers) made us wish we hadn't come. Its not as if Toulouse deserves this. It is such a historic city with young, lively creative people , and there must be loads of local energy waiting to be harnessed. Perhaps it's not serious and established enough for this place. At any rate nobody was having fun including us.
