“A little gem in the heart of Toulous!”
Reviewed 17 July 2010

Apart from its convenient location, a stroll away from all the main sights, this quiet family- owned hotel proved to be a real find. It gets ten out of ten for friendliness. It didn't have a lift. But this omission proved to be no problem. Our cases were whisked away for us, up the elegant spiral staircase. The ever cheerful proprietor could not have been more obliging. We actually felt sorry to say good-bye. RETIRED, DUBLIN, IRELAND,

I unexpectedly had to spend two nights in Toulouse on my own, and was rather apprehensive about the prospect. The welcome I received at Hotel Heliot, and the friendliness of the owner were very reassuring and I would highly recommend this hotel. I felt comfortable and safe. The location was perfect for walks in the city, restaurants, museums, the railway station and the shuttle bus to the airport. Toulouse is a beautiful city which I would love to revisit, and if I do I will certainly choose the same hotel.

Making allowance for the slightly shabby feel of the staircase and corridors, this is a clean, well-run hotel, with an owner who is far friendler than his much-vaunted cat!

This is an ideal stop-over place for a few days...ideally located near to the main squares and their collection of fine restaurants...The rooms are spacious enough and much effort has gone into updating what is an old establishment...as evidenced by the internet connections, the finger-print security door and the splashes of modern art.

Breakfasts are simple and non-changing affairs, but again perfectly adequate for purpose....but if you like variety and wide choice...eat out.

As others have remarked, the young owner is exceptionally friendly and helpful and never appears to go to bed....and it's a shame there are no dining facilities as the smells emanating from his rooms of an evening suggest he's not a bad cook!!

Parking is in the public car-park two minutes from the front-door and the discounts available by showing your Heliot credentials are generous (we paid less than £30 for a four day stay).

Apart from the recommended Fodor restaurants, we would direct visitors to the Nepalese restaurant...Himalaya ..Le Toit De Monde...excellent food and you can even get Nepalese tapas!!

Also recommended is the Shambala tea rooms near to the Basilica....Unbelievable teas and lovely pastries...No chairs and bongs if you fancy!

The Heliot Hotel, once you found it, has a good and cenral location where you can do a lot of sightseeing stuff by foot. If you're going the by car – what we did – you quite easy will get lost in a meshwork of one-way streets.
The hotel is a former townhouse transformed into a hotel, much of it it kept as it was, its a bit worn out at some points. But I found this very charming. The hotel manager is a extremly friendly, helpful and talkative tech-nerd who resides behind his three monitor wall at the front desk, maybe he's doing the some stock exchange trading as well. Once you checked in youl'll give your fingerprints to the locking system, the way you'll find your way back into the hotel at night. Please get me right, the guy was really overwhelming nice.
I'd recommend this hotel.

We booked 3 nights, trusting the reviews on here. We were not disappointed. It was a few yards from the airport shuttle bus. The entrance was a bit under-whelming - could do with a coat of paint, but the hotel was excellent.
Even though it was only mid-morning our room was available in 5 minutes. It was on the 2nd floor, up the windy stairs. It was large, with a light bathroom. Heliot, the cat, miaowed to be let in, checked us out, explored our luggage, and then had to be coaxed out again.
The hotel was a few minutes walk from the centre. There were loads of street drinkers around the area, but this seemed to be the norm for Toulouse. We saw a few 'ladies of the night 'in the streets behind the hotel, but felt safe as no-one bothered us.
We chose to eat breakfast in the hotel - 7.50 euros. The breakfast room overlooked the small courtyard garden, and was ruled by Heliot, who seemed to be in charge! The croissants and bread were warm and fresh, and with the addition of coffee, juice, and apple compote, breakfast was OK.
Eating out in Toulouse was very good. Lovely creperie one night, Brasserie d'Opera another (18 euro menu was fantastic) and Hippopotamus at end of the road when it was raining.
We did the Airbus tour - shuttle bus to airport and taxi from there.
I haven't stayed in a 2 star hotel in France for years, but Hotel Heliot was charming. The owner was friendly and helpful, and always seemed to be on duty - he works 7 days a week. There was an air of 'tatty chic', very different from standard chain hotels. Bed was comfy, room was quiet, breakfast good, and cat tolerated us - what more could you ask?

While the hotel itself is nothing special, and the location is a little seedy, the welcome from the owners and their cat is fantastic. It feels like being a guest rather than just another customer.

The hotel is just a short walk from the centre of the city, and right near the airport shuttle stop. The only downside is the rough stretch between the hotel and the main SNCF station, but that is easily avoided. All in all, a fantastic place to stay in Toulouse.
