“Toulousian hideaway - slept well”
Reviewed 10 July 2010

Air con most welcome after a sticky week of hot weather. Room up on 2nd floor, 2 velux windows in the roof, tastefully decorated room, comfortable, large bed. Yes the stairs are steep and no lift, I suspect they are the house's original stairs. Bathroom a good size and modern. No stand up shower, but I suspect this was because we were up at the top of the house and the roof and walls sloped. Particularly appreciated the kettle, tea and coffee in the room. Mini bar prices for a cold water not excessive. No noise from other rooms or from outside. When we got back from dinner we found that the lights didn't work for a couple of mins but then came back on.. not sure why. Also one hair on pillow and a tear in the sheet next to pillow .. but this is a small detail. Everything was clean, comfy, soft towels. Didn't have the breakfast.. You can walk up to the Halle aux Grains and there are plenty of cafés in front of it on the PLace Dupuy. Good location, 5 mins from Francois Verdier metro, 5 mins walk to the Grand Rond, the Museum and the Jardin des Plantes, 5-7 mins walk to Place Saint Georges and the shops. Definite good choice for a weekend break or if you are staying in Toulouse after an evening out.

Le Clos de Poitiers, run by owners M et Mme Faux at their mansion of a home, is a bed-and-breakfast rather than a hotel. The building itself has been decorated quite stylishly in a fin-de-siecle sort of way, while the rooms have individual decor. We were (sliently) upgraded to a triple room in the basement, which was spacious and had a large tub in the bathroom. The bed was a bit too soft for my liking. The nice touch of slippers, however flimsy, was appreciated. Now, probably due to the difficulties of the piping system, apparently all the drainage of the bathoom had to be operated by an electric pump, so everytime we used the WC, the sink or the tub, we heard this loud whirring sound and an almost violent trembling of the bathroom wall. Toulouse being a compact city, the slightly out-of-the-way location (near the Halle aux Grains Theatre in Place Dupuy) is not a particular hindrance, since it's only a 20-minute walk to the Capitole. Breakfast is simple continental - luxury bottled juice, bread and pastries (the fig preserve was very nice), and tea/coffee. The owners are reserved but polite, and perhaps if our French was more fluent they'd open up a bit more. This is definitely a place for the more mature-minded. Parking is on-site in the courtyard, quite a valuable oddity for a Toulouse house, and is charged at €10 although we were not told that prior to getting the bill. All-in-all, we prefer something like this with character than your run-of-the-mill, anonymous 3 or 4-star hotel. You can nitpick about a lot of small things but you have to consider that on the whole you might like it for being something different. Unless you need hot eggs and bacon for breakfast.

We stayed at Le Clos for 2 nights because it was close to family we were visiting in Toulouse. I'm not sure who its intended clientele are, but they are advised not to be tall, or have any difficulties climbing several flights of very steep stairs.
The decor has a certain overstuffed, dark charm to it, and the rooms were comfortable and clean, though the TV did not work. Our room was under the roof and had no windows, except for a pull-down pane in the ceiling. Since it was raining, this was not an option. Thus, it was rather like staying in a cave.
The breakfast was minimal, and we had to ask several times for each item. The proprietress was rather surly.
Considering all this, we felt the charge of 125 Euros overpriced. It may be a suitable place to stay for parents visiting their children who are studying in the city.

A very chic, stylish hotel centrally located in the vibrant city of Toulouise. Very tastefully decorated, a real 'boutique' hotel quite reasonably priced. 100 euros per night for a double room. The breakfast was extra at 13 euros per person and is not recommended as it is overpriced and nothing special. The owners, a married couple, on the whole, are pleasant and helpful especially Pierre. Not exactly in the heart of town but in easy reach of everywhere. I would recommend a day out in Albi and a walk by the river, stunning views!
