What a treat to find that you can actually get MORE than you pay for in life. We booked a basic double room for a weekend stay at this hotel but were amazed to be allocated a lovely, spacious suite with fantastic views over the quai. The food was great and the hotel staff efficient and friendly.

Overall our stay at Couvent des Minimes was good but not great.
Staff members were courteous and helpful but the amenities could have been improved.

We were disappointed to discover that after reserving a double/queen room our bed turned out to be 2 single beds pushed together with the join clearly present in the middle under the sheets. Unfortunately the hotel was full so we had to grin and bear it but the lumpy thin pillows didn't help matters.

If you need a hairdryer you should also bring your own as the in built hotel hairdryers are no better than a luke-warm breeze.

It wasn't too difficult to hear muffled voices from the room next door, suggesting that any noisy activity you might get up to in your own room could be overheard by neighbours...

On the plus side however, the hotel restaurant delivers a fantastic dinner menu! We had such a good meal there it almost made up for the beds. Excellent French cuisine and good sized portions that tasted divine. Desert is not to be missed either.

Also if you like a good cocktail then the lounge bar serves the biggest (and I mean BIG) and strongest cocktails I have had in quite a while - very tasty too.

The main hotel lounge with its high glass ceilings provides really nice ambience and is a lovely place to chill out after a day's walk around Lille.

The location of the hotel is very good too. Only 10 mins walk to get to Grand Place but is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre to still be quiet at night.

How on earth can this be a 4 star hotel?!!

It wasn;t great.

the staff were polite and helpful but the room wasn;t good.

the beds were so uncomfortable and the pillows a disgrace - lumpy and hard

to top it all off i am covered in little bites which makes me wonder if there were bed bugs.

AVOID

As a Christmas present for both my wife and my parents, we took them to Lille in late November for the Christmas markets. We found this hotel after almost booking the Crowne Plaza and were please that we had as it was a fantastic place, converted from an old convent into the beautiful of buildings.

The weather was very cold and on the second day we had very bad rain so we spent a couple of hours sitting in the comfortable lounge set beneath a huge atrium drinking very good coffee.

I would definately recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Lille and feel its only downside was its location. Although located in a picturesque area of Lille it took a good ten minutes to walk to anything in Lille itself.

A restaurant that must be visited also is "L'Assiette Du Marche" (http://www.assiettedumarche.com) which was expensive but worth every penny.

We booked through Eurostar and paid approximately £650 for six adults including train and accommodation for 1 night.

My wife and I had an excellent 3-night stay here in August 2006. The building is a listed monument - a former convent - and the layout, with cloisters and an indoor courtyard-atrium housing the bar and restaurant, gives the hotel a really special feel.

The hotel is set in a quiet corner of town, but within easy walking distance of the 'old town' and the bustling centre, so it is very convenient without being on a loud, noisy thoroughfare.

The staff were polite and helpful.

The rooms are fine, comfortable and quiet. Nothing astounding, but just absolutely fine.

The bar is a lovely place to go for a pre-dinner drink.

The breakfast is excellent; delicious, wide-choice, nice breakfast room.

We had not been to Lille before, but we will go back, and we will stay at this hotel if at all possible - it is great.

We have stayed at the Alliance about 10 times in the last few years. Would not stay anywhere else in Lille. A short walk from the centre through lovely old cobbled streets - never had any problems with safety even late at night.

Pay to park in hotel car park and can be difficult to find a parking place. Rooms vary enormously in size. Ask for one with an outside view (ie not over the atrium) and staff will do all they can to accommodate your request.

Breakfast good. They will cook extras such as boiled eggs on request. The atrium is quite magical in the evening with the pianist playing. Don't look anywhere else if you want somewhere comfortable, with some character and near enough to the city, but too near to be noisy.

  • Liked — So many features of the old convent remain
  • Disliked — Some rooms are small
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for rooms with outside views

This was a great hotel within walking distance of the main square. Very stylish inside, reasonably priced, excellent champagne selection. Rooms were comfortable and the service was very good. Parking was reasonable situated inside the hotel grounds. Was a great start to our trip.
