We had to stay over night in Lille due to travel arrangements and were very happy to find the Palais de Beaux Arts. What a gem! The museum is close to the city center, had fantastic art and overall was a great surprise! It's a definate must see when travelling in Lille! Don't miss it!

Well worth a visit, so much to see, good value and very good drinks at reasonable price in the cafe.

This is a simply stunning collection of work fro across Europe both secular and sacred. Beautifully arranged and exhibited on three panoramic floors.

Highlights were the 20th Century Paintings, Picasso gets everywhere, the relief maps in the basement gallery and for our visit the 'sound' installations by the music group Air.

That's it really the lighting was poor which is a great shame and frustrating for the visitor. One painting was so dark it was impossible to make out the subject matter at all. Personally the overall feel of being surrounded by dark religious oils was quite depressing The curators of this vast building could learn a thing or two by visiting The National Gallery in London. The entrance hall is massive and void of any art, just serving the purpose of an entrance desk where two assistants were employed to tell you to go to another desk to buy a ticket. It would be more practical to have one entrance desk in the foyer where you buy your ticket and utilise the enormous marble entrance hall by displaying more artwork. Just a couple of small corridors were dedicated to the modern masters Monet, Chagall, Picasso which made my visit worthwhile.
Arriving in the shop at the end of my visit (about 1pm) I was approached by the shop assistant who told me I needed to leave as she was going to lunch but I could come back at 4. Fabulous.

This was a good break from the rain in Lille. The collections are good and arranged in an easy to follow way. The stand out is the Egyptian artefacts on -1. The mummified cat is awesome! The only problem is the audio guide (english) didn't match many of the numbers throughout the museum which was disappointing and the ones it did match the information was very long. My tip: make sure you set aside 1 1/2-2hrs to see the museum properly.
