Got a deal through Eurostar, and picked this hotel. We weren't disappointed. Its impressive facade continues into the central courtyard/bar area which has been enclosed in glass. The building has been restored to a lovely standard, mixing modern with the old very effectively. The room was of an excellent size, with a lovely bathroom/shower. We didn't eat within the hotel, but the restaurant did look impressive. Its location is ok, its a bit of a walk to the centre of Lille, and a bit of a walk to the station, but nothing ridiculous. The staff were friendly enough, if a little 'french' about things.

Three nights of heaven! We absolutely loved this hotel. If peace and tranquility is what you want, with scrumptious food and excellent service this is the hotel to go to. We will definitely return.

My partner and I were stopping off before heading to Calais following a 2 week road trip across France and Switzerland. We headed to the brasserie for dinner. The food was appalling (stay away from the chittling sausage) and I ended up with the wrong meal which I was too polite to refuse as the incredibley grumpy waiter already seemed to have taken issue with us. My white wine was warm, despite repeatedly asking for it to be served chilled. Finally, the grumpy waiter insisted on standing over my partners shoulder waiting for him to pay the bill. This was after a hotel maid had let herself into our room in the middle of the afternoon just after we arrived (apparently they like to turn down the bed - and offer you chocolate!)

Lots of corridors, courtyards and conference rooms. Oodles of champagne being opened for the local business community who seem to use the large, glass roofed, courtyard bar as their networking venue. So it is bustling and the large, competent concierge staff are busy. An easy walk to the old town and the interesting Grand Tour bus; local history is complicated. We took a historic room overlooking a floral courtyard, which was quiet, cool well furnished, although smallish. As mentioned, the shower controls require agility. The "gastronomic" restaurant is not worth the money. But there is an ordinary brasserie, run by the hotel, on the corner of the site. Better to find rue de Gand, just NE of the cathedral, where the best estaminets are found. The hotel will not tell you this!

Hello,
We were staying for the 2 nights week-end in Hermitage Gantois.
The room was with the SAINTS. See my photos.

I booked directly 24 hours 169 euros before arriving on the hotel web site and I made a mistake with the dates ! When I phoned 10 minutes later to say I was not coming to-night but tomorrow, they changed my booking with no cancellation fee, keeping the best price. Virginie was very good and very comprehensive.

The room was great, quiet (1st floor) and beautiful.
It is best being in the 1st floor.
The restaurants are good, but not extraordinary.
Book there, it is great

It is true what a lot of other reviews has said about the hotel - the stunning lobby isn't matched by stunning rooms. However, the rooms are nice, and do what they can with an awkward layout forced by a heritage building. Our bathroom in particular was spacious and lovely, not to mention the awesome power shower!

I found the service exceptional. We were given our room when we checked in just before 11am - and given an upgrade. Our two requests to the hotel - first, a ironing board and iron, and secondly, a full length mirror, were delivered to the room quickly. We checked out the next day at midday, without actually even having to request a noon checkout.

All in all, I thought it was great value - we paid 130 euro and would stay there again in a heartbeat.

I stayed at L'Hermitage for a long weekend with my husband and two friends to celebrate both of our wedding anniversaries. It had proved more difficult than it should to book the hotel with long delays (days) between each email communication but finally we received confirmation that we were booked in. However when we arrived we found that only one room had been booked instead of the requested two rooms. The receptionist was starting to give the vague impression that we might be out of luck until our friend, who had been responsible for the booking, was able to point to an upside down copy of his email spied on the reception desk which clearly stated two rooms and suddenly the atmosphere cleared and a second room was successfully found for us.

Our room was slightly smaller than our friends but did have a window overlooking the street which gave some light. Their room had a window which was about a foot away from another shuttered window directly facing theirs so no light or view was possible. However at least they had a couple of shelves in the hanging cupboard for some clothes to be stored flat unlike ours. Both rooms looked attractive but it seemed a shame that a little more thought had not been put into the best use of available space.

The bathrooms were attractively decorated however were also hit by a lack of practicality. To reach the bath controls you had to be a contortionist, or at least very supple and tall, to reach around the shower enclosure across the length of the bath to a third way up the end wall. Unfortunately the maid had left the taps set to shower so I got rather wet trying to turn the water on for the bath and my husband got considerably more wet when he chivalrously helped me by reaching in to turn the shower off and reset the taps and turned them on for my bath. At least it confirmed again that I had made the right decision to marry him - which is appropriate on an anniversay weekend! It may be petty, but we also felt that one small bar of soap to cover the use both in the bath and sink for two people for two nights was a bit stingy. The one bottle of shampoo also had to last both of us for two nights. On the good side, we had plenty of towels which were lovely and thick as well as dressing gowns and slippers.

On the subject of good things - the general areas of the hotel are stunning and demonstrate a really imaginative conversion of a beautiful old building. The key features of the original buildings have been maintained in a very clever manner while bringing in lots of light and comfort in a contemporary style.

There are two restaurants - one very informal and the second very much a gourmand experience. We ate in the gourmand restaurant and we all enjoyed the food, which was inventive and tasty, although we felt that perhaps it was just slightly more complicated than it need be. The service was OK although we felt it was slightly irritating that the waitress made it clear that she was unhappy about my friend refilling our wine glasses even though she had not been to check that our glasses had been empty for some time beforehand. She did redeem herself by smiling and accepting a joke from us later so perhaps she realised that she had overreacted.

Overall we enjoyed staying at this hotel because of its setting and the interesting features of the public areas - e.g. the original chapel, the art gallery and interesting pictures throughout the ground floor and also the comfortable lounge and bar under the glass roof. The staff were friendly and helpful. We did not have breakfast or use the mini bar because both were unjustifiably expensive although we found that it was not difficult to find good and sensibly priced breakfasts at convenient alternative cafes outside the hotel. The hotel is conveniently located with a five minute walk to the city centre.

We believe that the hotel is not really consistently of a high enough standard in all aspects that you would normally expect of a four star hotel in France. Having said that, we would probably go there again for a short break if the price was right because of its public rooms and the friendliness of its staff. However we hope that overtime it might make some minor improvements that would immediately move it into the class that it obviously aspires to. In its current form we would not have been happy to pay the rack rate stated on the door of our room. However as we had negotiated a better price, we were happy it was reasonable value for money.

We would definitely recommend a trip to Lille. It is a perfect place for a weekend - plenty to do, very pretty buildings and squares in the old town, good free zoo with an interesting park within easy walking distance of the city centre, lots of decent shops and good restaurants, excellent Sunday morning market and a good museum, rated second only to the Louvre throughout France. Lively and friendly atmosphere throughout the city
