“Wonderful family stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2013

We absolutely loved our week with Rosemary and the Colonel, but you should read the other reviews to see if this is the place for you. Someone else hit the nail on the head, it is exactly like staying with your Grandmother - if your Grandmother happens to own a manor in France. We enjoyed our conversations with the Colonel, and could have spent many more evenings just talking to him. Rosemary is wonderful and kind-hearted, and treats you like family.
Sitting in the courtyard in the evening enjoying a glass of wine while the geese and ducks entertain you, surrounded by the beautiful old buildings is a worthwhile experience in and of itself. However, Bayeux is only a few minutes drive away. The war museum is actually about 2 minutes, which was perfect for us. We used the gite as our home base while touring with Overlord, as well as seeing Bayeux and Honfleur.
Just writing this makes me wish I was back there :) However, if you are a 'hotel' type of person than this is not for you. If you want to dive into the local culture, then this place is perfect.

We just spent 4 nights at Manoir des Doyens while exploring Normandy and the D-Day beaches. Rosemary and the Colonel were very gracious hosts. The rooms were comfortable and breakfasts consisted of fresh baked breads and croissants with homemade jams. Rosemary is a wonderful conversationalist in a proper English style while the Colonel is an undisputed on all matters relating to D-Day and the Normandy campaign. There is an extensive library of military history as well as an incredible map room of the D-Day beaches constructed by the Colonel. Rosemary helped us with dinner recommendations for an excellent restaurant. All in all a very pleasurable and enlightening stay

We stayed with the Colonel and his wife for a research trip when our son was documenting facts needed for a paper and presentation on WWII and D-Day.

Breakfast was hearty and delicious but some of the conversation was a little uncomfortable.

Although the rooms are not fancy, the location is very close to Normandy Beaches, also where the gliders were made use of. There is so much history in the area. If going in reference to WWII you need a lot of time.

The city of Caen is also nearby. 900 years ago it was the favored residence of William the Conqueror.

Bayeux has a tapestry which is a huge tourist draw, and a magnificent cathedral. Even for those not easily amused.

There are many many small cemetary's worth taking a look at in the small towns.
But the World War II Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is impressive and deserves some of your time.

Do as we did and plan to spend some time in Paris after.

Room Tip: By the time you arrive- if coming from the states you will be zonked.

We stayed here for a couple of nights in September. We had great difficulty in locating the Manoir run by Rosemary and the Colonel. Queries to people in the village of St Loup Hors proved unsuccessful. However, when we eventually found the place it is really very charming and quite beautiful. Rooms are basic but comfortable and the price is good. Breakfast proved interesting , the food is very nice with homemade jams and a good selection of breads. However, it is a very organized experience with guests assigned to specific seats at the long table and conversation somewhat orchestrated. Perhaps not to everyone's liking! We visited the war room with Rosemary containing models and a great deal of memorabilia of the Normandy landings. All in all, interesting and different from the usual run of B & B.

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning of September and it was certainly memorable. The location is fine to walk into Bayeux - we did it a couple of times a day and it took about 15 minutes. Just remember to take a torch at night, since the lane past the church has no street lights.

Rosemary is charming and really keen to make sure that you enjoy your stay. The food at breakfast was very good, but the seating enforced by the Colonel is a bit like a boarding school and we didn't enjoy it.

As a previous reviewer has mentioned, staying here is a bit like staying with your grandparents. Everything about our room was tired, in need of a refresh and certainly in need of a good clean. The shower room had dead flies on the window ledge, mould in the corner of the shower and I wrote my name in the dust on the dressing table. Our bed creaked incessantly. I think we may have been unlucky - my husband saw one of the other rooms which he said looked much better.

Some might find the set-up charming and quirky, we thought it was past its best - but this is reflected in the price.

We recently returned from our holiday in France and spent 3 nights at Manoir des Doyens. Rosemary is a charming lady who could not do enough for us. She recommended restaurants in Bayeaux, where we enjoyed some delicious food.Rooms were basic but comfortable and breakfast was sufficient (reasonable rates). Location was great for seeing the WW2 museums, graves and beaches.

Rosemary made us feel very welcome and gave us suggestions on how to plan our day. When we arrived, she showed us the amazing room of maps and information on the D-day beaches that her husband had created. The property was well maintained, beautiful, confortable, and clean. There was lively conversation at the breakfast table, and the location was perfect. She also has an English book library of books you can borrow. This was especially nice for our American family because the hosts and the other guests spoke English. Our favorite part was the adorable but fat ducks waddling around the property. Great value!
