It is very hard for me to write this review because Rosemary was outstanding communicating with me. She was very sweet, and very accommodating. She left shortly after we arrived to attend a family function, but left us under the care of her friends, Caroline and Collin, and they were terrific.

The location is wonderful; it is a very pleasant walk to Bayeux and all of its charms. It is within 45 minutes of all Normandy sights.

The first night I had trouble sleeping because I was thinking about leaving the following morning to stay somewhere else. The kids and I stayed in the attic (which was a cool place), but the cleanliness was suspect. There were multiple half-used bars of soap in the soap dishes and showers alike. There was also hair in the bottom of the showers which was extra unpleasant because the shower water drains very slowly. Additionally, there were half drank water bottles littered throughout our rooms. I just always think that if these obvious issues are in plain sight, what is there that we can't see? The other cleanliness of the home was average at best.

I don't recall if this was advertised as a B&B, but the breakfast each morning (3 of them for us) consisted of breads from a local bakery with homemade jams.

Stayed for 4 nights. Great place, lots of character (French building, English hospitality). Rosemary very welcoming and full of advice when asked for local eateries. Room large and plenty of storage. Narrow gateway to get the car through but plenty of space in the courtyard to park. Breakfast continental with lots of home-made preserves, excellent, everyone sat at one table guests and owners, therefore a long talkative occassion. In the evening sat in the garden and enjoyed a bottle of wine bought on our days out. Lovely, friendly, informal gite. Hope to go back again next year. 15-20 min walk into the centre of Bayeaux. Would recommend to everyone.

quirky old manor house which was used by the allies as a field hospital in WW2 - and the barn was used to house German prisoners; very reasonable price; good breakfast; the Colonel had lots of advice to give on where to go and the background to the battlefields; library full of interesting books on the area and WW2 in particular; if you are interested in the landings you must visit the map room; nice walk down a lane into Bayeux and saw cathedral and tapestry

Room Tip: ask for the double with the large bathroom rather than the twin with the small shower

We absolutely loved our week with Rosemary and the Colonel, but you should read the other reviews to see if this is the place for you. Someone else hit the nail on the head, it is exactly like staying with your Grandmother - if your Grandmother happens to own a manor in France. We enjoyed our conversations with the Colonel, and could have spent many more evenings just talking to him. Rosemary is wonderful and kind-hearted, and treats you like family.
Sitting in the courtyard in the evening enjoying a glass of wine while the geese and ducks entertain you, surrounded by the beautiful old buildings is a worthwhile experience in and of itself. However, Bayeux is only a few minutes drive away. The war museum is actually about 2 minutes, which was perfect for us. We used the gite as our home base while touring with Overlord, as well as seeing Bayeux and Honfleur.
Just writing this makes me wish I was back there :) However, if you are a 'hotel' type of person than this is not for you. If you want to dive into the local culture, then this place is perfect.

We just spent 4 nights at Manoir des Doyens while exploring Normandy and the D-Day beaches. Rosemary and the Colonel were very gracious hosts. The rooms were comfortable and breakfasts consisted of fresh baked breads and croissants with homemade jams. Rosemary is a wonderful conversationalist in a proper English style while the Colonel is an undisputed on all matters relating to D-Day and the Normandy campaign. There is an extensive library of military history as well as an incredible map room of the D-Day beaches constructed by the Colonel. Rosemary helped us with dinner recommendations for an excellent restaurant. All in all a very pleasurable and enlightening stay
