“Superb location, reasonable price, very helpful staff”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Based on TA reviews my girlfriend and I chose Hotel Reine Mathilde as our base for our four day side-trip to Normandy from Paris. We were extremely happy with our choice. Our reasonably-priced room was in the "new"annex (in fact a very old building newly refurbished) and was perfectly equipped for our needs. Staff were extremely helpful throughout our stay. For instance we had read on TA that it was basically impossible to arrange car-hire in Bayeux and that we would have to travel to Caen to do so. However the woman ( Daphne? -apologies if incorrect) at the front desk couldn't have been more helpful and arranged for us to hire a car -and an automatic at that (hard to hire in Europe)- from the Total gas station on the outskirts of town ( charming owner, highly recommend him, overcomes any language barriers with his magnificent gestures!).

The hotel isn't the George V but doesn't pretend to be. It's a friendly, welcoming, reasonably priced and spotlessly clean establishment and the perfect base for touring Normandy and the D-Day beaches in particular. Continental breakfast was basic but fine for us, nice strong coffee, juice and the bread and cheese was naturally delicious. Also a nice spot on the terrace for a refreshing evening glass of Norman cider before a stroll and dinner in a nearby restaurant or a lunchtime snack such as a simple, well made croque Monsieur sandwich ( mine was very tasty).

The location of this hotel can't be beaten as it is steps from the tapestry museum and a short stroll from the cathedral. It is 50 yards from Bayeux's charming Main Street and restaurants such as the outstanding La Rapiere. Parking is free in Bayeux after 7pm and very cheap during the day so no issue there for us.

I would definitely stay at the Hotel Reine Mathilde again when in the Bayeux area and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

I have been keen to see the Bayeux tapestry all my life so I didn't care where I stayed when booking the Hotel Reine Mathilde. What a surprise I got when this little hotel was so perfect! Our room was in the newly built annexe and we appreciated its clean lines and stylish interior. Plus the shower was fabulous!! We knew there was a pizzeria at the hotel before arriving so we were delighted to see so much more on the menu than just pizzas. We sat outside even though it was late October and ate our dinner admiring the beautifully lit cathedral just across the road. We had no trouble at all finding a park across the road from the hotel. We walked to the tapestry museum (finally saw it with my own eyes!!) and then went for a drive to the D-Day beaches. Our stay in Bayeux was lovely and the staff at Hotel Reine Mathilde made everything easy for us. We'd happily stay there again.

And that's about it.

We stayed in the new annex which was very average. It had clearly been built and fitted for as little as possible. While completely devoid of any character, it was nice and new when we stayed. In a few years I think the lack of spending now will likely show.

Parking, sure they tell you that you can park for free at a lot on the edge of town; what they don't tell you is that the lot is quite a ways from the hotel and completely gridlocked all day. We just paid to park in a lot a couple of blocks from the hotel.

My Father, Uncle and I stayed in the annex to the rear of the hotel during our battlefield tour and our room was brand new with an excellent shower and very comfortable beds.
We also ate in the restaurant which was the best value we had on our trip.
The location is superb for the D-Day beaches, the town and the tapestry.
Would highly recommend.
Free parking at the weekend is a bonus too!

My husband and I were on a tour when he was suddenly hospitalized for a week in Bayeux, France. My tour hotel was a long and expensive taxi ride to the hospital so I moved to the Hotel Reine Mathilde which is just around the corner from the hospital. The tour went on without us, and I was alone to solve all the problems. The staff were very kind and assured me I could stay as long as 3 weeks, if necessary. It was cozy and comfortable and food terrific in restaurant. They also arranged a taxi ride so we could see the Normandy beaches after my husband got out of hospital to rest, as well as a taxi ride back to Paris so we could catch our flight home at the end of the tour (that we missed). I was so grateful for the wonderful stay in Bayeux in spite of the stressful circumstances.

This hotel certainly had a small town charm, with our top floor accommodations overlooking the little river that runs through Bayeux. We got what we were looking for: convenient location for exploring the D Day beaches, accessible parking, a comfortable bed and space for rest. Pluses: very friendly, helpful staff (shout out goes to Guillerme) and restaurant downstairs serving tasty meals.

At the front desk, we were met by Guillume who helped us through our 3 day stay. His sense of humor kept us in stitches and his advice was invaluable. Every morning Dauphine's smile got our day off to a fun start. Rooms, food, location, etc were all very good, but these two made our stay truly enjoyable and memorable.
