Owner description: The town of Bayeux, in Normandy, lies 30 kilometres north-west of Caen. Bayeux War Cemetery is situated in the south-western outskirts of the town on the by-pass (D5), which is named Boulevard Fabian Ware. On the opposite side of the road stands the Bayeux Memorial. BAYEUX WAR CEMETERY, which was completed in 1952, contains 4,144 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 338 of them unidentified. There are also over 500 war graves of other nationalities, the majority German. The BAYEUX MEMORIAL stands opposite the cemetery and bears the names of more than 1,800 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died in the early stages of the campaign and have no known grave. They died during the landings in Normandy, during the intense fighting in Normandy itself, and during the advance to the River Seine in August.

A part of our trip we were looking forward to but unfortunately the Cemetery is closed for repair until February 2013. However you can take photos from the fence and gate and see enough of the Cemetery to make it worth a drive by and quick 5 minute stop

It's nice to at least drive by this cemetery and remember all of the British who also helped liberate France from German occupation. It's not a big site and not as visited as the American cemetery near Omaha Beach. If in the area, it's worth stopping to see.

A smaller cemetary, lovely location and a reasonably easy walk from the town center. Every stone has its own inscription.. roses and flowers everywhere. There is a registry that includes information about the families of the boys interred here.

I visited this cemetery because I knew it included foreign soldiers, including German, and I was curious to see how they handled that situation. The Commonwealth Graves Commission (I believe) maintains the cemetery very well, but we did notice that a number of tomb stones were no longer ledgible.

We visited the American Cemetery earlier in the day, and it was immaculate of course. This cemetery was different, and very sobering as well. There were many graves and tombs from different soldiers of many countries. There were many from Europe and Canada, Italy, France, even Germany. There were a number of Arabic and Jewish as well. Beautiful and very interesting to see them all side by side.
