Owner description: The town of Bayeux, in Normandy, lies 30 kilometres north-west of Caen. Bayeux War Cemetery is situated in the south-western outskirts of the town on the by-pass (D5), which is named Boulevard Fabian Ware. On the opposite side of the road stands the Bayeux Memorial. BAYEUX WAR CEMETERY, which was completed in 1952, contains 4,144 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 338 of them unidentified. There are also over 500 war graves of other nationalities, the majority German. The BAYEUX MEMORIAL stands opposite the cemetery and bears the names of more than 1,800 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died in the early stages of the campaign and have no known grave. They died during the landings in Normandy, during the intense fighting in Normandy itself, and during the advance to the River Seine in August.

“Have a map handy”

The Cemetry is not well signposted from the town and is a fair walk for old or very young legs so make sure you have a map or drive out and park closer.

“D-Day trip”
Reviewed 31 August 2014 via mobile

My partner being in the British army we wanted to stop by Bayeux to visit the British War Cemetery and Memorial.
I moving place to be on a sunny morning.
Really well kept and really peaceful too.
So much to swallow in a 3 day trip but we should always remember the boys and girls that lost their lives to make ours better.

“Make time to visit”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

This was a worthwhile stop. I would suggest that you combine the BWC with a trip to the Battle of Normandy Museum and the Monument to Reporters.

“Deeply affecting”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

What to say about such a place. Really brings home the horrors of WW2 and the human cost of 'victory'. Thoughtfully laid out and beautifully maintained. A fitting tribute to those who gave their lives on all sides.
