“Best of our trip!”
Reviewed 9 May 2018 for a stay in April 2018

Our stay at the Orangerie was simply fantastic. It's perfectly situated for visiting Bayeux, the D-Day Beaches, and Mont Saint-Michel. The Orangerie itself is beautiful, well-equipped, and comfortable. Finally, Claudia was an incredibly gracious and helpful hostess. Highly recommended!

“Beautiful Setting, Lovely "Gite"”
Reviewed 16 July 2017 for a stay in May 2017

We spent a week at this beautiful rental in the extension of "L'Orangerie", an18th Century residence located on the edge of a small town near Bayeux. The property is fully updated and enjoys a lovely, peaceful setting with views of the gardens and pond. (And if you like to listen to birds, you won't be disappointed.) Claudia, the charming hostess, is very helpful and responsive, and the location is excellent for visiting Bayeux, the D-Day beaches, and other parts of Normandy. We truly enjoyed our week at L'Orangerie in May, and would love to return sometime in the future.

“Truly chic and charming”

A beautiful property with farms on either side (with the exception of the "castle" to which it is attached) so it feels as if you're basking in lovely seclusion. Judging by the dearth of reviews, this is truly a hidden gem. Our goal was to be at the Normandy beaches on the D-Day anniversary. The hotels we would have chosen in Bayeux were booked so I searched the surrounding area and was lucky to have found this. Claudia is a wonderful hostess and greeted us with a bottle of Champaign on arrival. The day of our departure she invited us to coffee in the castle and we had a lovely chat. Her English is impeccable and, as a native of Switzerland, I'm guessing her German is too. Parking was just 30 feet from the front door and it was only about a nine minute drive to Bayeux on a largely deserted two-lane paved road through the countryside.

In an attempt to properly set expectations I think there are some things you should know. First, there is a washer/dryer combination directly next to the gite. Since this was at the mid-point of our trip we thought we'd launder a week's worth of clothing for use during the second week of our trip. Even though we were here three days, that wasn't a reasonable goal. The complete laundry cycle takes a little over three hours so we were only able to put a load in in the morning and another in the evening. The washer/dryer is very, very small by American standards so load sizes were less than half what we are used to. There were two couples in our party so we really didn't get that much laundry done. The clothes were damp when they came out, so we had to hang stuff up to fully dry. Second, the toilet for the master bedroom on the ground floor is out in the main living area. We initially thought it a guest half bath, but it's not. Third, there are no amenities and only a single pump dispenser of all-purpose (hand, bath and shampoo) soap that one has to move from the vanity to the shower to the tub. Fourth, the tub does not hold water. Fifth, there are large, thick, hand and bath towels but no bath mats so wet floors exist outside of the shower (no door) and tub. Sixth, there was no heat or a/c, though we really didn't need either at this time of the year. Seventh, we had a bit of a challenge finding the place even though I'd printed out a map. It would be very helpful to have GPS coordinates. We ran into a kind family who tried calling Claudia but there was no answer so we stumbled around a bit until we found the place. It's very protected from the road, so even having the photo of the place was of little use until we pulled into the drive and past the trees.

Thanks for reading. If you’ve found this helpful I will appreciate a thumbs up below.

“A lovely place to stay”

Stayed for three nights in November 2016. Very comfortable and well appointed. The under floor heating is a star, nice and cosy in all rooms. Easy free parking and very easy access to Bayeux and the Normandy beaches. Free and fast Wi-Fi. Our host, Claudia could not do enough for us including a free bottle of Champagne on arrival - what more could you ask for!

Lovely rooms, lovely living room. Spacious, elegant throughout, with gorgeous period furnishings but modern bathrooms and kitchen. The owners are delightful and the village charming. Parking, obviously, is fine as this is right in the country. It couldn't be nicer.

“Can I live here forever?”

I am a little reluctant to write this review, for fear it will encourage hordes of people with more money than I to beat a path to L'orangerie's door. Still, I suppose people who provide a quality product should be recognized, even if the recognition drives the product out of my price range.
I'll be brief: I have never stayed in a place quite so lovely and can't imagine a place more magical. I wish I were there right now.
