This was home for William the Conqueror, the shaper of medieval England. The castle walls are impressive, but there is not much inside. An overpriced museum presents a very Gallic slant of history. Skip the Museum and walk (free) the ramparts to feel the past glory.

Guillaume Le Conquérant had built in Caen a very large castle. A part of it has resisted to the american bombing which destroyed most of the town and let imagine how strong was this fortress at the eleventh century.

English heritage and National Trust manage our castles and stately homes very well. I can't help but think after a visit to Chateau Ducal or Caen Castle, that they shouldn't take this over. This after all is William the Conquerors castle and the site is massive. However, it seemed to be more of a short cut for locals to cut across the grounds thanfor people to appreciate its history which is a real shame.
I enjoyed my walk around this castle but really more should be made of it and its history.

If near Caen, it is worth stopping to see the castle. Once the home of William the Conqueror, this 11th century historic site boasts buildings from various time periods and occupations. The castle wall gives you a great bird's eye view of the city and it was interesting to imagine life in that era. Be sure and notice the construction methods and the interesting window/wall slits at different angles to accommodate the archers who guarded the fortress. Like stepping back in time for a couple of hours. A parking lot is underneath the area and some street parking is also available. A few nice cafes are within walking distance.
