“The best guide and a simply great guy.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2014

Mathias LeClere proved himself to be the best D-Day guide we could possibly have found. From the moment he collected us from Caen station to the moment he dropped us back he was friendly, courteous and above all highly knowledgeable. We were a mixed bunch: Grandparents, parents and teenagers but at the end we all proclaimed ourselves totally satisfied with out D-day experience!

“Passionate content with entertaining style”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

Mathias Leclere provided a most enjoyable 3 day tour of WW2 sites through northern Normandy, customizing the itinerary for us to make some family veteran site connections. His detailed knowledge combined with entertaining style made the time go too quickly. A 4th day also with him focused on Bayeaux / Norman history / St Michel gave us so much more than guidebook content. Five star rating for Mathias, with thanks.

“Why Norman cows made good spies & other intriguing and entertaining information.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2014

Engaging and passionate, with encyclopedic knowledge of Operation Overlord, its build up and its aftermath, Mathias LECLERE is the perfect guide. If any fairy godmother were asked to produce the perfect guide, she would present Mathias. If a perfect guide for a DDay tour were on one’s Christmas list, Mathias would be Father Christmas’ first choice. Having hired guides world-wide, to include a guided Tanzanian 10 day safari, guides in Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice), France (Paris, Versailles, Giverny), Belgium, Canada and several Central American countries, Mathias was the most spectacular of them all – and our guide in Tanzania was reallllly hard to beat.
With a wide-ranging knowledge of French history in general (not to mention being able to discuss a few of the House of Plantagenet’s 14 kings of England), Mathias ascertains interests and conveys information smoothly; with his excellent communication skills and breadth of knowledge, he paints a vivid picture of happenings, whether he was standing with you on Bloody Omaha, in the German bunker at Pointe du Hoc or driving by hedgerows while seated in his very comfortable touring van.
The quality experience begins before you ever meet Mathias. He inquires of any potential relatives or acquaintances that may have been involved in Operation Overlord and starts his research. The tour is highly personalized, especially if Mathias knew there was someone of particular interest to you. From Ste Mere Eglise, to Utah Beach, passing through pastoral countryside – and by many substantial hedgerows to Pointe du Hoc, and onward to Omaha Beach, our day of touring ended at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. A note of thanks, written in French, along with a small rock painted with the same sentiments, placed along with a small American flag at the base of one particular cross headstone was one of the most memorable moments of my time in France.
In an attempt to rein in my boundless admiration Mathias and the high quality of his work, I cannot convey all the detailed information Mathias relayed during our nine+ hours tour with him. Covering Utah, Omaha, Ponte du Hoc an Ste Mere Eglise, his recitation of facts and figures was impressive, to say the least. Two tiny samples of lesser known yet intriguing and entertaining information:
1)Mathias knew the 29th Infantry Division’s nickname Blue and Gray was due to the fact that the Division is comprised of soldiers from states who fought on both sides of the American Civil War (the 29th was among the first wave of troops who went ashore on Omaha Beach).
2)When he obligingly stopped so I could take a picture of two young Norman (a breed I had never seen in the US) bulls, Mathias said that Norman cattle made good spies, particularly around hedgerows. Being curious creatures, if someone was in a hedgerow, Norman cattle would walk over to them and gather up, giving any observer an opportunity to realize something was in the hedgerow. Before he ever spoke, the bulls raised their heads and watched us watching them. Glad I was never in a hedgerow with them around…

When I go back to France, Mathias is my guy for a tour of the British related areas of Operation Overlord. I enthusiastically recommend Mathias LECLERE as a DDay guide. I will stop gushing now.

“Expertise delivered with alacrity”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014

My daughter and I were fortunate enough to have made a good choice when we booked with Mathias. We took a full day tour of the beaches and another full day tour to see the abbey. Mathias has invested in a very confortable new van for his guests. He has deep knowledge of the events of D Day and a comprehensive understanding of WWII. His family was present in Normandy during the occupation and he shares family memories from those traumatic times. He was a very good and patient teacher to my 14 year old daughter, and he presented the horrifying events of that time with clarity and professionalism. He has a charming personality and is very warm and engaging. His best quality was weaving human interest stories into the recitation of events so he kept the tour very interesting. He was patient with questions and made the day fly by. He overwhelms you with information and stories. We were worn out! What a wionderful gift he gives to tourists of Normandy.
