“Nice place, bad food”

The food was not good at all. Too expensive for the food quality. The location of the restaurant is nice and charming....

“Perfect atmosphere and simple things done well”
Reviewed 21 May 2014

A long day in Giverny. You know the feeling, right, the tourist staple. Early train from Gare StLazare to Vernon, shuttle bus to Giverny, queues, six hundred million American tourists from river cruise liners all called Hank and Ermina. Monet's garden is so beautiful, but staying in the tranquil zone takes some doing amongst your fellow acolytes. And by 1, you're hungry, tired, a little fed up, and over your fellow tourists with a passion.

So we walked, really as far as we could from the madness around the town centre looking for something...not knowing what it was really. Not so touristy. Not fussy, not pretentious, just...

And by a complete fluke, in La Guignette, there it was. A table by a gently flowing river. Everyone seemingly having a relaxed time without a care. It was kind of like stumbling into someone elses family lunch but they didnt mind and just made you welcome instead.

Really nice, tasty, straightforward food that was absolutly perfect for how we felt that day brought hot and fast from the open kitchen we could see from the table. A pichet of red. They even managed not to laugh at my terrible French. And not a Hank in sight.

Life is good.

“Rustic charm and great atmosphere!!”
Reviewed 3 September 2013 via mobile

This restaurant has a rustic charm and great atmosphere. The menu is limited but we were not disappointed with what we had on the 2 consequetive nights we ate there. We had the plat du jour on both occasions. We were happy to try our best French with the patron and the locals and had a great evening. Good rustic food, great wine and good value for money, lovely setting by the beck that runs through Monets garden. Would recommend this place and will visit again if in the area.

“Nice situation but disappointing food and service”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

The Guinguette didn't really live up to it's name. There was an eclectic selection of CD music but no dancing.

The restaurant is situated just by the river so book if you want a seat there rather than on a bar-stool at a large barrel.

The menu is pizza or daily special. I don't particularly like pizza so we went in the afternoon for a drink and asked what the special was....... steak. Sounded great to me. At dinner I said that I would have the special...... fish, she said. Hmmm, I opted for the pizza. Then we were forgotten about for 30 minutes (we were served our drinks). Pizza was soggy and undercooked.
Chef seemed more interested in chatting with his smoking friends at the open-air kitchen.
I can't say that the servers were unpleasant. They just seems completely overwhelmed.....
We paid and left. (Had to go to the counter to get the check)
Wouldn't go again.

“Nice place, good food”
Reviewed 11 August 2013

Waterfront restaurant with a nice "plat du jour" that change everyday. Be patient though, sometime kitchen gets overwhelmed but people are nice and the food taste great. All of this in a nice looking little place, "guingette" style for a very reasonable price.
