“Service With a Smile”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2014

We were on our way back to Calais after a holiday down south and took a detour to Lisieux as we had been here the previous year and stayed at the Ibis. However, after a long and gruelling drive of about 10 hours we were in the mood for a bit of luxury so arrived late about 9.30 p.m. Reception was welcoming and the room was comfortable, a good size and very clean. Also having tea and coffee and bottled water in the room is a plus. Good value for money at about 100 euros for the night. Parking is safe and well lit. We sat in the bar and enjoyed cool drinks as it was a very hot night and at midnight retired to our room and enjoyed a bit of English TV (3 channels!) to unwind. As we arrived too late to eat at the restaurant which closes at 10.00 p.m. we just made do with the drinks before sleep. Lisieux is a great town but the nightlife is sparse and it is best enjoyed during the day as the town is very "buzzy" at lunchtime and there are lots of things to see.

Breakfast was excellent. Bacon and eggs are very rare in France and were enjoyed and there was lots of choice, fresh fruit, yogurt and even pancakes with maple syrup! They are obviously used to dealing with large coach parties from various countries, i.e. USA and on that morning there was a large Japanese party. Some of the items were in need of replenishment but I asked in my best French and they were immediately refilled.

On the whole Mercure is an excellent chain and we would definitely book again if in the area.
The zoo (Cerza) nearby is well worth a visit as the staff there are exemplary. By the way if you want to start the day with a kick, slip a coffee pod in the Nespresso machine and it will really wake you up!

This was a well used and very well managed popular establishment, Recommended to readers, however the lack of air conditioning in rooms and banging doors along the corridor reminded me that I really should have tried the Calvados before going to bed. The outdoor swimming pool was very refreshing and the al fresco changing arrangements "spectacular" for a modest 55 year old !
The Gardens Restaurant was busy and very good for those not using fast food choices across the road

Room Tip: Ask the receptionist on arrival

At the Eastern end of Normandy and the edge of the city of Lisieux, is a small charming Mercure hotel. We stayed for four days in late July for our visit to the Normandy region. For the price we paid (~107 Euros per night-breakfast included), we got a pretty good deal during the initial wave of summer holiday travelling in Europe. Although this was a nice play to stay, both location wise and value, there were several areas for improvement.

First, our room did not have air conditioning. I did bring a fan with us which made our evenings in the room much more bearable. On a given day when the temperature reaches 30C, your rooms will cook. I understand there are some refurbished rooms; however, none were available during our stay.

Second, the refrigerator in our room did not work. No matter what setting you selected, the result was luke warm drinks. Ice cold drinks with a working fan in the room would have done a lot to alleviate the hot nights.

Finally, during the week the staff who serviced the breakfast did not keep up with the food demand. On both days during the week when food was emptied (eggs, sausage, croissants), the servers did not fill these items at all. Once food ran out, it was out. This was a bit disappointing considering large tour groups stayed here indicating large masses of people would come down to eat at one time.

Now that I shared my troubles, let me outline a few great things about Mercure Lisieux. The location is tremendous as you are on the edge of town with only a five minute drive into downtown. The hotel staff also has "tourism" books with information regarding local attractions throughout the Normandy region.

The other highlight was the staff at the desk and the weekend resauarant staff. Both groups of people went out of their way to provide excellent service for their guests.

Room Tip: Bring a fan as some rooms do not have AC!

Went on a coach trip to the hotel. Found it ideally placed as a base to explore Normandy. One problem on arrival was that being 6 foot tall I was banging my head on the Dorma ceiling. The room was very nice and refurbished but to save knocking myself out I asked to move to a room on a lower floor. The manager was very helpful and we were given a room on the ground floor. This room was not part of the refurbishment and though a little tired it was perfectly clean.
When the refurbishment is complete it will only add to the hotel which on reflection was more than adequate.
Would not hesitate in staying here again.

Room Tip: If you are tall avoid the second floor

My husband and I stayed at this hotel as part of a coach trip to Normandy with dalesman travel .
We arrived late at night and were shown to one of the refurbished rooms which look very classy but which was unbearably hot .We tried to turn the air conditioning down to 19 but it just switched off and jumped up to 22 there were no instructions on how to operate the controls and so we went down to reception. The lady at the desk was very helpful she showed us another refurbished room which was also hot and the air conditioning did the same . She then showed us to one of the older rooms on the ground floor which was not as pretty but a lot cooler and so we took that .
After spending four comfortable nights at this hotel we found the room to be clean and comfortable for which the housekeeping staff should be commended . The food ( breakfast and evening meals) were excellent even for my fussy husband and I must thank the chef who prepared an excellent cooked breakfast on the day of our departure, even though we had to be up at 5 in the morning in order to be away to catch our ferry home.We were all expecting a continental cold start but were surprised and delighted with a hot cooked breakfast .The evening menu was in french but any items that we could not understand were clearly translated by the hotel staff most of whom we found to be charming ,approachable and informative .This hotel may not be in the heart of town but with a few more tweaks could give some so called four star hotels a run for their money.

Room Tip: If you have a problem speak to reception . We found them to be very helpful in trying to make our...

We stayed at the Mercure Lisieux for three nights on a recent visit to Normandy. We paid in advance for a standard room. The room rate included breakfast. Our room wasn't that big, but was clean and had most everything we needed, including a small fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. Only paper cups were provided, which we have not experienced at previous Mercures we have stayed him. Likewise only plastic ‘glasses’ were provided in the bathroom. The bed was comfortable, but for some reason the mattress was shorter than the bed base. A taller person might have issues with the mattress length.

The bathroom was small and the wash basin and shower fittings old. The water pressure was poor and in the morning obtaining hot water took a while. There was no working extractor fan in the bathroom, so condensation was an issue. The towels provided were not very absorbent.

We ate breakfast in the restaurant three times. The variety as well as the quality of the food on offer was excellent. We ate dinner in the restaurant twice. The food was very good, although an entrecote steak I ordered from the al a carte menu one night was on the tough side. This is not the first time I have experienced this in France. The restaurant has a good wine menu. The waitress service was excellent.

The Mercure is situated on the outskirts of Lisieux in the direction of Evreux and close to a main road. Traffic noise could be heard at night from our room (125), although it wasn't sufficiently intrusive to be a nuisance. It might be a problem in summer though as the hotel doesn't have air conditioning and opening a window would definitely let in more noise. For those that like French supermarkets, an E. LeClerc hypermarket is located only a few minutes walk away from the hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a room that faces away from the D406.

We are very happy you had a nice stay in our hotel. We are on refurbushiment, 2 floors are ready (2nd and 1st). Next winter all our room will be finished. You stayed in a not yet new room and are sorry for the bathroom.
For a next stay, we recommmand to ask for a renovate room.
Kind regards

Very clean modern hotel, to the usual Mercure high standards.

The restaurant had excellent food on offer, but no English menu, and the restaurant staff had little English knowledge. I would have thought in this day and age at least a menu in English would be available, this is usually found even in undeveloped countries.

The room and bathroom were well appointed, although the ceiling was a little low at one side of the room.

I enjoyed my stay here, it was handy for the customer I was visiting, and there were plenty of local amenities.

My only issue was the lack of English speaking staff away from the reception, although they were all very friendly and helpful.

Many thanks for your comment regarding your stay. Our hotel have been refurbished shortly, and our guests are very happy with.
Our appologies for the English menu, we've change our "carte" a few days before, and we had not enough time to translate it. We'll do soon.
Waiting forward for welcoming you again.
