“Perfect for short visits”
Reviewed 17 May 2012

The hotel is brilliantly located for visiting Honfleur - only a few steps from all the attractions of the town and has a terrific position overlooking the harbour with really good, cheerful and helpful English speaking receptionists. What it lacks is the sophistication and ammenities of a higher star rated hotel. Rooms are compact but practical with tea/coffee making facilities, free wi-fi, safe and mini bar able to accommodate own drinks. My bathroom was very small for two people with only a shower, unlike the photos shown on the website, but had a good hair dryer. Breakfast service was a little slow, with limited choice. "Fresh" fruit was horrid - bruised and seemed old, cheese which ought in France to be wonderful, was a pre-packed poor selection and crepes had no way of being heated. However, good fruit juices and tasty preserves, honey and fresh bread, coissants and pastries. Parking is a bit of an issue but just round the corner at 8€ for 24 hours, not a major problem in the grand scheme of things. And between 8pm and 8am it's free. I'd stay there again, it's simply so convenient. You could do much worse.

At first I didn't want to stay here because I thought a Best Western would have no charm, but it was actually quite attractive and decorated in a unique way, not like a cookie cutter chain hotel without individuality. The room was spacious and nicely decorated. The bathroom was large and had a good shower. Perhaps the one negative was that the shower had no barrier from the rest of the bathroom so you had to put towels on the floor after showering. The location on the harbor was great.

This was our third visit to Honfleur and previously we used the Mercure. The disadvantage with the Cheval Blanc is that there is no nearby parking and if you use the public car parks you need to renew your ticket each morning whereas the Mercure has an onsite car park. In other respects the Cheval Blanc has the edge. We booked superior rooms both of which were fairly small but well appointed including tea and coffe making facilities, which is not common in France. Both rooms had views over the harbour and were quiet at night. We booked on a room only basis and took our breakfast in one of the many cafes close by. Honfleur is a great place to visit with lively restaurants and bars and this hotel is right in the middle of it. We will definitely stay again.

The hotel itself is fine, nothing amazing. The location is great for walking the waterfront district of Honfleur. However, parking doesn't exist but they do offer private parking a mile or so away in a secure space for an extra 12 euros. It's harder to find than it seems from the map the desk clerk drew for us, but we opted for the secure parking. You can also choose public parking but have to feed the meter every 8 hours round the clock, which is closer but still inconvenient. We upgraded to a corner room in order to have a bit more light. The room was comfotable, small but we expected that. Nice view since we had the corner. Water on two sides. The desk clerk was very friendly, accommodating and happy to help in little extra ways. Also, both desk clerks we spoke to spoke English. There was no concierge but the deskclerks made up for it by helping, including with our luggage. Ther is an elevator. I would recommend it for a short stay. We were only there overnight and it worked well enough for us.

The hotel is conveniently located at the edge of Vieux Basin. It was created by fusing three or more different old houses – this adds to its unusual design and tight spaces but also to its charm. The venue does not offer restaurant nor bar facilities but with the abundance of bars and restaurants within an easy walking distance this should not present any problems.

Rooms are generally small but quite practical, with tea making facilities and mini-bars. It is worth upgrading to the Superior rooms for they offer better view and marginally larger space.

Entrance to the hotel itself is rather inconspicuous - can be easily missed. The reception area is basic and without much appeal and can feel crowded very quickly.

Breakfast was a let down. Although not very expensive, at €12 per person, the selection was small and quality, particularly of meats, very poor. You can easily get petit déjeuner in any of the cafes along the harbour – with a great view thrown in. Or just get a baguette at a nearby boulangerie and do it yourself. The Service Continu creperie next door did not open until 12.00 - some continu...

The hotel offers no parking or even unloading facilities – stopping outside just to check in leads to traffic congestion in the area. There is a payable car park just round the corner (€8.50 per day that had to be renewed from 8.30am) or a free car park another 300 yards further down the road.

Staff were reasonably helpful – they always seemed to be chatting on the phone but happy to interrupt their call to offer assistance.

Room Tip: Rooms 332 and 333 had excellent views and were quite comfortable – 332 slightly better so

We enjoyed staying right on the water and it was a handy walk to everything. The price was good and so was the hotel. We were there 2 days and the in-room wifi did not work the second day but it was available in the lobby. The room was just big enough for us and our 2 suitcases. The separate toilet made the place chopped up. Don't people wash their hands anymore?

We had to go to the parking lot nearly 3 blocks away and buy another ticket at 8:30 in the morning. Not the most convenient arrangement. Why would the hotel not arrange something better?

We would stay there again, all things considered. This is Europe so our expectations were lower.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good. The second floor is closer to the breakfast room.

This is a three star hotel and you get exactly what you pay for - a good, honest, clean, no frills hotel. No more, no less - but that's a good thing. The location though is fantastic, less than 50 yards from the Harbour where you are spoilt for choice with restaurants. We booked two tripple rooms for a family of six, which again, worked out great. Honfleur is beautiful and we will certainly use this hotel again when we return in the summer.
