This is a well laid out museum featuring most of Boudin's art work along with other fine French artists. Well worth the entrance fee.

Pre-impressionist works ---really nice art exhibit. We saw an exhibition of maritime ladies, from mermaids to women working in the local seafood industry in the late19th century... Highly recommend

Tucked inside the former convent of the Augustinian nuns who ran the Honfleur hospital, this small museum is built around a collection of Eugene Boudin paintings and a first rate collection of objects from 19th century Normandy--costumes, furniture, lace, jewelry, chests, pottery--assembled by an Honfleur merchant and his wife (who died in 1913). It was a treat to see such a large collection of Boudin's work--those spectacular skies!--and instructive to ponder what made his paintings stand out--in technique, subject and complexity--from those done by other painters in the exhibition. Boudin's working sketches--in some cases you could compare draft and finished piece--were worth the visit, at least for me. Some of the lesser known impressionists were quite good, and look for the paintings of Honfleur harbour. We arrived at the museum about ninety minutes before closing, and I wish I had allowed myself at least two hours. The gift shop had some lovely replicas of 19th century shawls (which I didn't see anywhere else in Normandy) and I wish I had left myself enough time before closing to examine those more closely.

While in Honfleur, my husband and I walked up the hill from the harbor to visit this museum. There is an interesting exhibit of costumes from the early days of Honfleur as well as some furniture. However what we found most interesting were the paintings done by Bodin as he was such an influence on one of my favorite, impressionist, Monet. It was Bodin who influenced Monet to paint outdoors in the light. What better place to do that then in Honfleur or along the Seine. This is a light and airy museum with a wonderful view of Honfleur from the third floor. It is well worth seeing and can be done in a short amount of time.

This museum houses a modest but insightful look into the work of Boudin as an important prescursor of the many more well-known impressionists who followed in his footsteps. The museum also houses the works of other locally active artists, both 19th century and contemporary as well as regional exhibits including furnitures, costumes and items illustrating the local art of lace and ceramics. The top floor also provides a wonderful view over Honfleur and onto Le Havre.
