One of those great long weekend places to go. Nice little harbour, lots of shops (cidrerie's), very good restaurants and close to deauville too. Clearly the landscape caught the attention of the 'impressionists' with lots of travelling artists showcasing their talents.

the image of the boats, buildings and their reflections in the water is stunning. Bring a camera and enjoy! Very picturesque.

Honfleur is in 'lower Normandy', famous for its cider, apple brandy known as 'Calvados', as well as for its old harbour/fishing port. There are historical buildings around the harbour that one has to visit to make the most of this town. The harbour has three sides and the walls are made of stones and the uneven path are cobblestoned, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes or trainers. Visit 16th century St. Catherine's Church which resembles the nordic stave style church of Scandavania; 17th century St Leonard's Church with its two huge fonts made of natural shells, a beautiful brass lectern and the statues made of varnished wood. Outside there is a pondlike structure made of granite with running natural spring, perhaps it was once used by people to wash themselves before entering the church; St. Etienne Church, now a marine museum if you like everything to do with sailing and the Salt Halls now used for exhibitions and conferences. The narrow alleys have tiny shops selling cakes, biscuits, apple cider and apple brandy that you can bring back with you as gifts for friends and family. The harbour promonade is surrounded by umpteen eateries 'al fresco' (tables outside) that is impossible for one to walk along comfortably, therefore it is advisable to take the steps down to the edge of the marina and walk until you see another set of steps to walk back up. The changing light on the Seine estuary inspired impressionists like Coubert, Boudin, Monet and Jongkind to form 'ecole de Honfleur' here for artists and thus began the 'impressionist movement'; Another famous frenchman - composer and pianist, Erik Satie was born in Honfleur and his home is now a museum.

This is a very touristy town, but the harbour is truly beautiful and worth a look and a walk around if you can find a parking spot. Be careful because we parked, looked for a place to pay for our parking and did not see one. When we returned, we had an 18E ticket. Welcome to Honfleur!

Honfleur is truely gorgeous. We stayed here for 2 nights at the start of our tour of France. It is picture postcard perfect. There are lovely narrow old cobblestones streets to wander around and explore. The harbour is lined by colourful tall timber buildings and lots of restaurants and is filled with pretty boats. Don't miss the timber cathedral.
