Mercure Rouen Centre Cathedrale Hotel
Ranked #4 of 52 Hotels in Rouen
Reviewed 21 May 2014

We chose the Mercure Rouen for its location and proximity to the cathedral. It could not have been better, right next to the cathedral. The room #106, was spacious and had room enough for our two bags without having to step over them. This room could have accommodated a family of four (2 adults, 2 children).
The staff were helpful in pointing out where to go for restaurants and sight seeing.
The public areas of the hotel were maintained nicely. There is parking at the hotel.
Be aware the hotel is located in the true inner city and could be difficult to locate if you have not done your research on maps or with Sat Nav as many of the streets are narrow and one way.
Tip: the Rouen tourist office is also in the square next to the hotel and opposite the Cathedral where you can obtain a recorded self guided tour of Rouen. We liked Rouen very much and believe it has more to offer than what most guide books describe.

The hotel is good overall. However, during the time we are staying at the hotel in May, we have very warm weather, but the AC is not on in the room (controlled by the central AC). I inquire about it because the room is too hot and stuffy, but the hotel replied that they do not turn on AC until the end of May. This is very inflexible and unacceptable. The hotel is not proactive in addressing the issue and let all the customers suffer during the time of their stay.

A great location for a hotel, when you are talking about a hotel like Mercure Rouen Centre Cathedrale, can be a curse as well as a blessing. Yes, the hotel is so close to the glorious cathedral that we could see it out our window. But we were also just across the street from a major construction job, a renovation of a half-timbered property that woke us early with loud banging and other noises that went on all day long.

Our room was perfectly comfortable, though, so I can't complain too much. And the breakfast in their lobby restaurant - buffet with lots of options - wasn't bad. And after staying in two lovely but quirky boutique hotels in Paris and Reims, it was nice to stay in a more polished hotel, with nice decor and very high quality furnishings.

Stayed here for a 3 night long weekend and wish it could have been just that bit better.

First off as all say the location is incredible - right in the heart of the old town, but beware if driving Rouen is a maze of one way streets and this must be the hardest of all the hotels to find because of it's perfect location - I wish they could provide much better instructions on their website and check their signs in the town. 2 hours to get here from Calais, 2 hours driving round and round Rouen going mad - definitely not priceless!

The public areas of the hotel are great, seemingly recently refurbished and reception for check in was efficient and we got into the privilege room we had booked very quickly. Lots of nice features - with super comfortable beds and pillows with memory foam, Nespresso machine and free soft drink mini bar fridge. There were the normal nice products in the bathroom and good entertainment equipment with reasonable speed wifi included. Sadly the room is let down by very tired decor, with faded carpets, cracked plaster and a bathroom that was probably great in the 1980's. To match the rest of the features and keep it's 4 star rating this hotel badly needs a refurb.

The promised view of the cathedral from the balcony was hilariously Fawlty Towers esque as you can see the huge spire and a bit of roof over the tops of the intervening houses - definitely made us laugh. Don't book it if this is your deciding factor (it wasn't ours).

Biggest let down was the demeanour of some of the senior reception staff who were abrupt to the point of rude - possibly they have been putting in too many hours or just need a hospitality refresher. This was made up by the great attitude and friendliness of all the junior staff.

Maybe we were unlucky with an older room, but would probably stay somewhere else when we come back to Rouen.

Room Tip: We had 514 and it was tired, maybe there are some newer furnished ones

Stayed in a "privilege" suite. Very spacious sitting room & bedroom. Bathroom is a good size with a bathtub/shower. Nespresso machine is nice to have. We had a good sleep in a very comfortable bed with good pillows.
Breakfast in the hotel is good quality but the usual price for a hotel.
Location is very good, right in the centre of Rouen, just around the corner from the cathedral. A lovely town with very old wood framed buildings.
If you drive in a GPS is a must (or a good navigator). To get to the hotel there are a number of one way streets and pedestrian shared, narrow streets. Once you're there however, its worth it.The basement parking is tight for anything larger than a small car, but a Jaguar made it in and out.

We stayed only one night here on a visit to Rouen. The hotel was very welcoming and the room was clean and modern. The carpet was a a bit old and faded but pther than that no complaints. The breakfast was very good. One word of warning if you plan to stay here. It is extremely difficult to find if travelling by car. Also the underground catr park is quite a challenge if your car is larger than the average. Things to be aware of but overlal a good value hotel.

Room Tip: A privilege room may have a balcony looking out to the cathedral

Dear StuartLiverpool,

Thank you very much for your comment on Tripadvisor. It is a pleasure for us to read that you enjoyed your stay.
According the hotel access, we know it can be difficult and we are sorry about that.
We are completely dependent on the city council. We asked for more road sign but it seems impossible. So, the only solution we have found is to send a detailed map to guest or to guid you by phone until the hotel when you arrived in the city center.
We really apologize and please, be sure that we try to do our best to solve the problem.
For future guests, please, do not hesitate to indicate the "Rue des Arsins" on your Satnav to facilitate your arrival.
The staff and I wish you a very nice day.
Best regards.
