Best Western Hotel Litteraire Gustave Flaubert

My husband and I recently spent two nights at the Hotel du Vieux Marché. We had trouble finding it in our car because it is located in a pedestrian zone. You need to drive down the rue de Fontenelle, turn left at the rue de la Pie, which will be blocked by a metal post. On the driver's side there is a tall post with various buttons. Hit the red button. It will ring at the police station (!). Tell them you are there for the hotel, and they will lower the post. Drive past the entrance to the hotel on the rue de la Pie, turn right at the first opportunity, and about 15 yards down on the right, you will see the entrance to the courtyard of the hotel. We were able to park there (there is also a parking garage) and easily load and unload our baggage. The staff were welcoming. The public rooms of the hotel are pleasant without being particularly attractive. We got a room on the 5th floor, looking out over the courtyard to the roof tops beyond. The room was very small, even by French standards, but attractively decorated in a dark color with a boat motif. The room got very warm in the afternoon sun, but there was a large fan already placed in the corner, which we gratefully used. In the summer, it must get very hot in these west-facing rooms. Everything was clean and spruce. The breakfast buffet--pretty expensive at 13.50 euros per person--was good without being wonderful. We had trouble with our rental car while we were there, and the staff were especially helpful in getting information for us. The Place du Marché, just half a block away, has a small permanent market and is lined with many restaurants and cafés. We ate at Le Terre Nuevas and had an excellent meal. For French literature buffs, the hotel has the added attraction of being directly across the street from the birthplace of the playwright Pierre Corneille. In summary, the hotel is pleasant and in a great location for sightseeing in Rouen.

Excellent location makes this a good choice for good value mid-range accommodation. Rooms lack a safe & also no storage drawers which makes unpacking a challenge. But beds extremely comfortable and good breakfast spread so we were very satisfied during our 4 night stay.

The rooms are small but pleasant. The breakfast is all that could be desired in a French 3 star hotel including scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, none of which I tried.. The staff were friendly, helpfull most efficient.

Nice hotel, with thoughtfully and recently decorated rooms. Fantastic location right on the old market. Service fine, rooms clean, good for a one night stop over though perhaps a little on the expensive side for what it is.

Found the hotel with my sat nav, otherwise it could be tricky - and even the sat nav sent me to the wrong door! Access is actually via a fairly narrow street. Reception was friendly enough but like most hotels in Rouen, parking can be a rare experience. In this hotel you drive into a lift which then lowers you to the parking level. Room was OK, albeit a bit small and most of the channels on TV are either French or German. Unlike the last BW hotel that we stayed in (in York UK) there were no coffee/tea making facilities. Breakfast is buffet style and in my view poor value for money e.g. the staff didn't appear to be keeping an eye on the (hot) food, not replenishing when needed; hence if you arrived a bit late you could be unlucky. If you can, I suggest that you skip on this and make your own breakfast arrangements - as we shall next time. All that said, we found the hotel to be acceptable and in a good location. We will probably use again when next in Rouen

My wife and I spent the first two nights of our vacation at this hotel and were pleased with our selection. The location was great, which is the main reason we selected it. Major sights are within a short walk and restaurants, brasseries, boulangeries, etc are foud in great numbers within a short walk.

Like most hotels in France, the room was small. However it was certainly adequate for our needs and was a good value, overall. Be careful with the tib/shower. It has a high side to step over. The continentel breakfast was very good, but is not cheap - at 13.50 Euros each. Parking was not a problem, though it is limited to a small courtyard at 8.00 Euros per night - the alternative is a undergorund garage aceessed by an elevator system at 9.00 Euros per night. Don't even think about parking on the street!.

For simple accommodation, this is a good choice. What will bring us back to this hotel on our next stay in Rouen is the friendly and helpful staff, who are fluent in English.

It was pretty dark in the rooms as others have mentioned. It is in an excellent location right downtown. Would I stay there again...probably not, but I did not research other hotels in the area. The complimentary breakfast was ok - coffee, bread, dairy.
