My husband and I recently spent two nights at the Hotel du Vieux Marché. We had trouble finding it in our car because it is located in a pedestrian zone. You need to drive down the rue de Fontenelle, turn left at the rue de la Pie, which will be blocked by a metal post. On the driver's side there is a tall post with various buttons. Hit the red button. It will ring at the police station (!). Tell them you are there for the hotel, and they will lower the post. Drive past the entrance to the hotel on the rue de la Pie, turn right at the first opportunity, and about 15 yards down on the right, you will see the entrance to the courtyard of the hotel. We were able to park there (there is also a parking garage) and easily load and unload our baggage. The staff were welcoming. The public rooms of the hotel are pleasant without being particularly attractive. We got a room on the 5th floor, looking out over the courtyard to the roof tops beyond. The room was very small, even by French standards, but attractively decorated in a dark color with a boat motif. The room got very warm in the afternoon sun, but there was a large fan already placed in the corner, which we gratefully used. In the summer, it must get very hot in these west-facing rooms. Everything was clean and spruce. The breakfast buffet--pretty expensive at 13.50 euros per person--was good without being wonderful. We had trouble with our rental car while we were there, and the staff were especially helpful in getting information for us. The Place du Marché, just half a block away, has a small permanent market and is lined with many restaurants and cafés. We ate at Le Terre Nuevas and had an excellent meal. For French literature buffs, the hotel has the added attraction of being directly across the street from the birthplace of the playwright Pierre Corneille. In summary, the hotel is pleasant and in a great location for sightseeing in Rouen.
