We arrived at the Abbaye for a single night stay on July 8th, 2009, but enjoyed the atmosphere and location so much we stayed for four nights using the hotel as a base and exploring the Loire Valley by day. Its a beautiful location, quiet and quaint. Just like the Priories described in the Pillars of the Earth! We explored the Abbaye itself before seeing the nearby sights, and there are art exhibits throughout the place.
The room was clean and the bathroom had been recently renovated so it was in great shape (great water pressure in the shower!). We added a roll-a-way bed so the room was tight but overall much larger than the Paris hotels in a similar class.
We made dinner reservations for the first night during the call to reserve the room and found the restaurant delicious. The food is directly from the gardens and fresh as can be. The price is quite high though, so watch out! Other dining nearby include three restaurants - we tried two and found them great. Go to Montsoreau (about 10 mins away) for more choices.
The nearby town is quiet, even Friday and Saturday there is not much going on so if you are looking for night life this is not the place. We were fortunate to arrive during the summer Spectacle so there was a free concert and outdoor movie on Saturday night. The tourist center in the middle of town offered lots of great insights into local places to visit and we bought a trail map for hiking and explored the hillsides and small towns by foot as well.
I loved the place and would recommend it for a night, or longer!
