Recently my wife and I did a walking tour through the Loire valley (Angers to Chinon). Great countryside, easy walking, friendly locals, great weather, what more could you want. Our 2 day stay at Domaine de Mestre was one of the highlights. Originally a Fantevraud Abbey farm. Some buildings date back to 12th century. It has been in the same family since 1795. It was turned into b&b 27 years ago. It is still a family affair. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable, the hosts helpful and friendly. The highlight was the home cooked meal by Madame Dauge. Highly recommended.

A beautiful place hidden away in beautiful, quiet surroundings. We were guests in the family home withe the grandparents serving up the most amazing food and the beautiful niece looking after us at the table so well. The bedroom was light and airy and very very comfortable

Home cooking at it's best and the company of other people staying made this a very special night.

Can't wait to go back!!

Just returned from our second visit to this farm/hotel in the Loire. We last visited 4 years ago, since which time the dining room and reception have moved and by doing so have lost something of their "rustic charm". This a delightful farm complex with a spacious courtyard together with its own small chapel. The family also make their own quality soap on the premises -a business that has grown considerably since our last visit.

The bedroom was well furnished, the bed comfortable and the bathroom was modern with a feel of care and quality. We were shown to our room by Monsieur though we had to struggle to the first floor with our own cases with no offer of assistance.

We had decided to have dinner on our first evening and this was very good with some of their own produce. You have to accept that although the price is similar to a restaurant there is simply no choice but fortunately we both liked the omelette starter and the pork main course. Ice cream as a sweet was Okay but we would have thought something home made would have been more appropriate.

Monsieur, who sees himself as "front of house" would speak only French -and although I have no doubt he could speak English he chose not to do so which did not make us feel comfortable with our school French. He also did not take too kindly to our decision to eat at restaurants on our other evenings but we felt that we wanted some choice in what we ate and some atmosphere. Breakfast was fine with good quality food and variety - though we share an earlier comment about the plastic beakers for the orange juice.

The shop selling the home-produced soap has a very wide range and we spent quite some time -and money - there. We proffered our credit card at the end to be met with a very firm "Non". So beware-its cash only!

This "hotel" has so much going for it in terms of position; history; quality of accomodation and food. If you are a fluent French speaker you might feel more at ease -the rest of the family at least smile and are pleasant but I'm afraid our view of our stay is coloured by Monsieur who is aloof and made no effort to make us feel welcome.

We would not return as we have "done" this area but would recommend to a friend-but with some reservations!

Dear Sir ,
Thank you for your letter , I will present myself I am the daughter of Mr Dauge and with my parents run " Mestré " .
Yes there have been some changes in " Mestré" this is due firstly to an obligation to be within
the European regulations . Hence we took the opportunity to invest in a decor rich in history and memories using our Patrimoine. .
Mestré offers a daily dish only as we are not a restanrant as such and don't want to be . Of course if there was a problem vegetarian etc. we would find a solution .
My father , the man of the house , born and raised in Mestré . Can some days seem distance and uninterested , but I assure you he has a great respect for all people . He is someone extremely humble . Having been elected as the Mayor of Fontevruad for over 40 years giving his time and energy to others . My Father does not speak nor understand a word of English . May we try our best ! Please do not let the language barrier cause misunderstanding or animosity .
Lets take a moment to think of all the English Kings burnied here in Fontevraud . Did they speak English , that is the question ? ......
Best Regards

My wife and I recently spent three nights at 'Le Domaine de Mestre' and found the accommodation to be spacious, clean and quiet over night. The owners do not speak English but we do speak some French so we found them to be helpful and friendly. We had one breakfast during our stay but on that day the breakfast room was crowded by two large and noisy French family groups and the breakfast was quite basic so we did not repeat the experience.

One does have to park some way from ones room but there are useful hand carts just at the edge of the car park which you can use to trundle your luggage to the Hotel Reception.

The accommodation is well located for visiting the Chateaux of the Loire Valley and close to the grand 'Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud' where Henry the Second and William the lion heart are entombed.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for taking the time to write your feeling's of your stay with us in "Mestré".
We are always interested in objective feedback which help's us to please our guests more. True the car park is away from the rooms but we took this decision for the comfort of the guests, keeping the entrance calm and also safe for the children of the house and guests.

Best regards

Found in Alasdair Sawdays guide and v good standard. period house & farm buildings surrounded by spacious gardens and various outbuildings. all kept beautifully by obviously hardworking hosts.

Good sized bedroom with beautiful park views, clean narrow long bathroom, elegant house, gourmet home grown, home prepared food, wonderful

Very busy hosts running working farm and making soaps -couldnt take too much time to talk at length to guests but accommodated unusual requests where possible. 2-3 kms out of Fontevraud. We had a most enjoyable 2 night stay as part of our cycling tour.

We were booked into this hotel as part of a cycling tour group. Most of our group was housed down the road at the Abbaye but due to lack of space a small group of us ended up here.

We were shown to our rooms, quite comfortable and spacious, with a very nice bathroom. I immediately took advantage of the tub by having a soak (it was a long day on the bike). Unfortunately for the rest of the group apparently there is only enough hot water in the hotel for one or two baths. Everyone else ended up with cold water!

The courtyard was extremely pleasant for gathering for a few wines before dinner. Our group had organised to dine in house, there is nothing else really in walking distance so unless you have a car you will probably need to organise dinner at the hotel. We had a nice meal, very tasty and well presented. The host was a bit taciturn, but with a group it didn't really have any impact. If you were relying on the host to liven up the evening you may be disappointed.

The hotel is located outside of Fontevraud in a nice quiet country setting, ensuring we had a lovely night's sleep. Breakfast the next morning was disappointing in terms of quantity and quality, a bit of cereal and fruit juice. Since we were cycling that day, I ended up having a black-out before lunch from plunging blood sugar! Breakfast could stand being a little more substantial, with a bit of homemade care. We know they have the kitchen skills to do so.

If we were to come back to this area I don't know if we would give this another go.
