My husband and I had just landed in Auckland, collected the hire car and were bound for Hamilton for the night before continuing onto Rotorua. It was getting late so we decided to have a look in Huntly for some dinner and arrived at The Old Court House around 8:30pm.
The Old Court House looked quaint but inside was welcoming. We both loved the history that is obviously key to this place and how the owners have retained this charm.
Unfortunately a couple of things had sold out (my husband ordered the rack of lamb but but was later told that they'd run out and I had eyed off the salmon special but it was no longer available) however we both settled on the scotch fillet. When it arrived I must say we were both very impressed! It was cooked to perfection and even though my husband rarely eats steak, he loved it! The glass of house red I washed mine down with (Dusky Sounds merlot from Hawke's Bay) was most adequate too.
We weren't going to stay for dessert but couldn't go past the warm chocolate brownie and we weren't disappointed! When the chef himself brought it out for us to share, he also advised that they hadn't run out entirely of lamb rack but he didn't feel like it was enough for a serve; it's fantastic when the staff take such pride in their work.
All up it cost us about $88NZ for two steaks, two house reds and the dessert which we thought was good value, especially as it was such great food, a lovely setting and the staff were so friendly.
If you get a chance, pop in and try for yourself (and watch for trains that sometimes go past - that was a bit of a surprise too!!)
