“A short course on the history of the city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2014

This modern, light filled museum provides the visitor with a wide ranging overview of the history of Le Mans from Roman times through the Medieval period. Major construction outside the building makes handicap entry almost impossible for the next several weeks.

“Extraordinary enamel portrait of Geoffroy Plantagenet”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

The enamel effigy of Geoffroy Plantagenet is about 2 m tall, and dates back 800 years. It is one if not THE oldest enamel existing of this size and detail. This museum also houses the treasure of Coeffort, a large silver collection dating from the XIVth century, and a moving and beautifully scultpted Christ on the Cross, 2 m high, from the XIIth century. Visiting the museum, skip through the ground and 1st floor, mainly coins and pre historic and Roman archeology which anyone having travelled in Italy will have seen much more and better, and come straight to the 2nd floor, to marvel at these few really prize unique pièces of medieval art.

“Lots to see and enjoy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2012

Ancient buildings used in many medieval movies as background. Interesting little shops on main street. Lots of photo opportunities.
