“Great location, clean, cheap BUT AVOID if you hate lots of stairs and small bathrooms”

The hotel is centrally located and ideally situated around the corner from all the bars, restaurants and cafes in the old town. The rooms were very quiet, with windows opening out into a courtyard. The building, though kept in good condition, is quite old. There are three floors and NO LIFTS. The en-suite bathrooms are TINY, the "bathtub" a glorified basin that would be impossible to get into if you were any taller than five-foot-two. This is NOT the place to stay in for more than a couple of nights. Rooms were clean and painted in bright and friendly colours. Towels and accessories were sparse but what do you expect for €50/night in central Nantes? Bed was low but fairly comfortable. Linens were not changed nightly, and there are those annoying laminated cards asking people to "care for the environment" and crapping on about how much hot water and soap is wasted on washing towels, etc etc. Ignore and insist on your towels and linens to be washed if in any doubt.

Room Tip: Go for something on a lower floor. Better yet, go somewhere else if you really prefer a place that c...

I stayed one night here in December.
Hotel right in the city centre. very convenient if you want to enjoy the city.
The owners were very efficient and made sure that i would be taken care of when arriving late.

Nothing really fancy but an affordable, reasonable quality hotel. My room was on the 3rd floor and very quiet with TV, bathroom and free wifi. Bed was comfortable. Fitted my low budget and need perfectly.
Would stay again.

My teenage son and I stayed here for 4 nights in October. I had chosen the hotel from reviews reporting the great loaction and was not disappointed: two minutes walk from the Commerce tram stop and in an older part of town about 10 mins walk from the castle. The rooms, including bathrooms, are kep very clean by the friendly staff who really could not do enough to help us during our stay. The beds are comfortable and the bedding clean and fresh. The bathroom was small but again very clean and, being a world-wide business traveller, to a very impressive standard that is not matched by many 4* and 5* hotels. Also impresively, there is free wifi in the rooms - a real benefit in a budget hotel and much appreciated by us during the stay. The restaurants around the hotel were terrific too. The staff speak English well - great considering our French is terrible! Although in the centre of things, the hotel does not suffer from street noise at all. Being on the first floor, the lack of a lift was not a problem for us although reviews had warned of this situation so we arrived prepared to find ourselves walking up and down stairs.

We experienced two slight drawbacks. For some reason we found it difficult to sleep due to internal noise from other guests. They were not particularly noisy but the sound seemed to travel through the walls and ceilings. Also, being located next to the stairs we were aware of people walking up and down at all hours. Finally, there was a confusion over the room rate and we were charged more than the confirmed booking price. However, I do not think this was a deliberate 'slight of hand' from the owner but a genuine confusion over whether the booking was for a one or two bed room rather than whether it was for one or two people. I had booked a double room explaining that it was a mother and son so could share a double or have 2 twin beds. We were allocated a room with 2 double beds. This was obviously a more comfortable option for us.

If I were travelling to Nantes again for the same purpose I would probably use the hotel again, although I would not expect to sleep!

Make sure you are in top shape if you stay at his hotel, especially if you get a room on the fourth floor. No elevators.. However it is well worth the climb and our room, number 44, was a very large room with two double beds, two wardrobes and an ensuite bathroom, 50 Euros per night, breakfast 4.00 euros p.p. The hotel is very well located in the centre of Nantes;restaurants, stores and cafés around the corner. 10 min walk to the Chateau and the railwaystation. No frills, but extremely clean and quiet. The owners take care of the property themselves and are both very pleasant and helpful. Book ahead since Saint Daniel is very popular and is almost always fully booked. Only 18 rooms.

Stayed at the Saint Daniel October 16 to 19, 2009. Will be back!

We stayed at here for 3 nights after spending 3 nights camping at Hellfest recently in June. The first night's room was on the top floor overlooking the cobbled street and without a shower or bath, (the shower was located off the hall area) so was a little cheaper. This room was small, with a television (we were too eager to sleep and then explore Nantes to watch it), but had a large window which opened up to the sunny sky. A perfect reminder of being in provincial France.

At breakfast (which was a generous offering of very fresh bread rolls, coffee or tea, jams, yoghurt and fruit) we were offered by the very friendly, softly spoken owners another room on a lower floor with bathroom.

This room was larger with a table and cupboard for clothes/cases as well as a large window overlooking the church courtyard. Unfortunately there was a renovation of the church's buildings going on, so what would have been a quiet, pretty courtyard normally was dusty and noisy.

In summary, Hotel St Daniel is a wonderful hotel nestled amongst the 'old town' of Nantes. The owners are friendly, go out of their way to assist you with questions such as the closest laundry, best restaurant and other queries about the region and accommodate us Australians with very poor French.

I would definitely recommend making Hotel Saint Daniel the place to stay while you visit Nantes.

We stayed for 4 nights (Sept 16-20) at this charming little 2 star hotel: right in the heart of Nantes' bustling Medieval Quarter, we felt very safe at all hours of the day and night. This was truly the best location in Nantes, right on a cobblestoned pedestrian street and steps from shops, squares and an excellent choice of dining for all budgets. We walked everywhere from here and were very happy to have so much right outside of our front door.

The hotel itself was very clean but might present a problem for those with lots of luggage as there is no elevator. I had some concerns about noise as our window faced the street and there were so many cafes and bars nearby but this was never a problem with the window closed.

The room itself (#11) was quite large with a comfortable double bed, a spotless bathroom with strong shower and daily maid service. We paid 42 euros and were very happy with the value for money we received. Having stopped and taken a look at pricier hotels (Pommeraye, La Perouse), we would go back to Hotel St Daniel again regardless simply because of its unbeatable location and very personal service. (PS: Wouldn't stay near the train station, very sketchy out that way)

  • Liked — Location, cleanliness, friendliness of owner, value for money
  • Disliked — No internet access (but WIFI available if you brought a laptop), lumpy pillows
