“A Saumur Romance...”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

We were late. We were driving to Saumur and had indicated to Le Patio's host Romain Legrand we would arrive by 5:30pm. Romain told us he had a function to attend that evening, but he would be there to meet us. Unfortunately, major roadworks brought highway traffic to a standstill and our estimated time of arrival blew out. My partner phoned Romain with a revised estimate of a 6:30pm arrival. Romain said that was fine. And then another phone call...we hoped to arrive by 7pm. When we finally arrived at Le Patio shortly after 7pm, I fully expected Romain to be a little "testy" given the lateness of our arrival. But there was no sign of any annoyance from him, quite the opposite in fact, and he expressed sympathy for us in having to contend with French road maintenance! He led us to our room (the Blue Suite), explained the breakfast procedure, passed on some local restaurant tips, and bid us a good night.

Long ago, Le Patio once once used to function as a post office. I don't know how old the building is, but there are signs of age in its general appearance. Our room was very spacious, and its bathroom more than adequate. The room is tastefully furnished, but it's fair to say that the furniture offers more in looks than in comfort. Assuming the other rooms are of similar condition, one could imagine investing a small fortune modernising the place replacing the old with the new, a "facelift" of sorts. But upon reflection, I like it just the way it is. "Shabby chic" is how one reviewer described Le Patio, and I couldn't agree more. Take a walk around the streets of the town's centre, visit the nearby Château de Saumur and soak up the ambience of the place. And as you enter the courtyard of Le Patio and make your way back to your room, you recognise this charming Chambre d'Hôte is entirely consistent with its surrounds. If I had one criticism to make, it would be the lack of internet service from within our room. Perhaps that has now been corrected. A strong wi-fi signal can be found in the ground level dining area.

Much has already been written about Romain and his genuine warmth as a host. He does indeed strive to make his guests' time in Saumur as enjoyable as possible. Restaurant tips, maps, advice on tourist attractions...it's the "standard" we come to expect from hosts with local knowledge to offer. But there are some hosts who exceed the standard, and go beyond what is expected in providing superior service. We had mentioned to Romain one morning at breakfast that we were looking forward to our evening hot air balloon ride over the Loire Valley. Due to poor weather, the trip was cancelled, but fortunately for us, we were notified by e-mail that another spot was available the following evening. We expressed our interest in taking that spot but when we did not receive confirmation back from the hot air balloon company, we got a little concerned. Romain simply took charge and with a couple of quick phone calls, got the confirmation we needed.

The offer of complimentary drinks in the courtyard is something that Romain places some importance in. At the end of one long day, we returned to Le Patio quite tired and wanting to simply relax and enjoy the cool quiet of our room. Romain was in the courtyard sharing some drinks with other guests and called out to us to join them, but we politely declined. On our last night at Le Patio, before heading out for dinner, Romain again invited us to join him for some champagne - this time we gratefully accepted. Just little gestures of hospitality perhaps, but entirely consistent with the man, and his attention to detail in taking care of his guests.

Our decision to spend 3 nights in Saumur before finishing the French leg of our European holiday in Paris proved to be a good one. Saumur and its nearby surrounds have many attractions worth visiting. Our stay at Le Patio and meeting Romain was certainly a highlight of our trip.

Fantastic old building, refurbished and decorated by Romain with such style! He even managed to incorporate a centuries old hat he found in the loft in to the decoration of the breakfast area.

The suite was huge and elegant, everything you would expect from the pictures. There were no glasses in the room for us to drink the bottle of wine we bought that day but you can ask Romain for anything and he will be of service. When we asked him for some glasses for water, he was immediately on to us and asked us what wine we were drinking so he could give us the correct wine glasses from his extensive collection.

Romain was very helpful throughout our stay. We turned up at a different time to what we planned and he left where he was to let us in, we rang him on several occasions for directions and he allows you to leave your push bikes in his courtyard. He was generous and a super helpful friendly guy.

We had a fantastic evening in the bar area with Romain and two of the other guests.

Breakfast was nice, with warm, fresh bread, croissants and typically brilliant French coffee.

Le Patio Saumur provided us with a delightful stay in Saumur with accommodation being full of character and charm. We stayed in the Blue room, which was more of a suite, and had a wonderful relaxing night on our journey south. The ambiance of the property was terrific and you could feel the history. The host Romain was a true character who's wish was for you to have a special break and enjoy yourselves. Breakfast was included in the room price and was excellent. If your planning a stay in Saumur be sure to try here - you will not be disappointed.

Another great trip advisor find! We stayed 2 nights on way back from French road trip. As soon as you step through the door and into the courtyard you know you're in for a treat. The room we had was huge - yes it was a bit shabby chic in decor but all so well put together and clean and comfortable I thought it was great. The star of the place is Romain who is so welcoming and helpful. In a great location too - there's free parking on the street but as we had a soft top car we parked in the hotel next door for a small fee - worth it for the piece of mind. Highly recommended

We had a lovely, huge room up under the eaves and overlooking the Loire! Best part though was our host, Romain, who truly seemed to want our stay to be the best ever. Suggestions of things to do, places to eat, and a glass of wine in the courtyard our last night there all contributed to making this one of the best places of our entire 3 month trip.
I can imagine going there to write or just be. The decoration in the public spaces is wonderful - quirky and interesting (think of old carriage lamps, a top hat and a enormous old but working clock among other things in the breakfast room). The courtyard is a tranquil oasis away from the street noise. A five (my husband says ten) minute walk to an excellent restaurant, Le Bistro Tonton (see separate review).
There is free parking just across the street!

Room Tip: Can't get the terrible rating away from pool and fitness center. LePatio has neither. Street n...

We just returned to the States from France. We were lucky enough to book a 2 night stay on our visit to the Loire Valley. Our room was very cozy, the building was beautiful, and our host, Romain was fabulous! Very nice breakfast in the morning and great atmosphere in the late afternoon/evening in the courtyard to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. As a bonus, the price was good.

I just returned from Saumur. I stayed at the wonderful Le Patio Saumur. It is a truly beautiful place with such ambiance. The blue suite I stayed in was very spacious and comfortable and the actual patio/courtyard is stunning and very beautiful. It is a wonderful place to sit in the evening and chill out. The breakfast is good with great coffee and french bread. The breakfast room is a designers paradise with such beautiful objects and so artistic. As an artist myself I felt very comfortable and at home here. But what really makes Le Patio so special is the host Romain Legrand. He is kind and considerate and such a beautiful person. he has such warmth and energy and it was a very special experience to meet him, because he is such a unique and lovely person and such a talented host. I love Saumur but staying at Le Patio made the visit extra special. I found it on google and thought the place looked lovely, but in real life it is even better and I would be happy to stay there for a lot longer if I had the time. I would recommend Le Patio Saumur to anybody and the experience of meeting Romain Legrande has been a privilage and a delight.

Room Tip: I just know that the Blue Suite was very comfortable and spacious.
