Located on a leafy square in the historic center of Saumur, my wife and I were lucky enough to get a dinner reservation at Bistrot Les Tontons, steps away from the lovely Hotel Saint Pierre, where we stayed during our visit to Saumur; thanks to the help of our hotel manager.
It was the first evening of our 10-day visit to places in the Loire valley, and we had just driven to Saumur from CDG airport, northeast of Paris.
We were ready to have a modest dinner and go to bed.
What we had was an encounter with wonderfully friendly, attentive restaurant staff, a generous and helpful guide to tasting the local wines that he selected and nurtured himself, a fine dinner of several courses and consistent good quality, and a feeling that we were very lucky to have started our visit to the Loire valley in Saumur and at that delightful restaurant.
We would happily return to Saumur, and to Bistrot Les Tontons.
