“Rustic historic hotel”
Reviewed 15 August 2014 via mobile

The welcome and introduction to the hotel we received was one of the friendliest ever. It was almost like being welcomed into a family home. The building itself was ideally located for exploring the treasures of Saumur and you could feel the history of the hotel. In some of the public rooms it was like stepping back in time and my children said they felt like royalty staying there.

The hotel is not modern and lacks many touches you would expect form a modern hotel chain, but that is also part of it's charm. We had 2 rooms with an interconnecting door. The breakfast was extensive (for France), delicious and worth paying for. The only extra we would have liked was a kettle in the room and Wifi with a good speed.

We only stayed one night but we will definitely go back. The hotel was very welcoming and very central. It does not have its own restaurant but there is an excellent restaurant at the "bottom of the garden".

A nice property in a great location, but in need of some TLC. Staff were very friendly when we arrived. The communal areas leading to our room had seen better days. The room itself was a good size, but needed brightening up. The bathroom was fairly new, but cheaply finished. With a bit more imagination and money spent on the place it could be so much better

We arrived here very late as our train from Paris had been delayed by French strike action. It was 10pm and we had missed dinner so the very helpful guy on reception called around and got us in at a local eatery. The hotel overlooks the Loire from the front and the castle to the rear and is a few minutes walk into the town. It has a beautiful courtyard out back where you can sit at breakfast. The breakfast was typical French, nothing new to report there.
Our room at the front of the hotel was fairly small, clean and nicely decorated. The bathroom was also small but sufficient and again, nicely decorated.
My only complaint, (although I didn't at the time) was that the room had a slightly unpleasant smell about it. When we arrived at night the window was open, which I thought a little odd but the next day after we had had breakfast and gone back to the room when the window had been closed the room smelled like damp linen or like a bed that needed changing. Not overwhelming but also not pleasant.

Stayed here for an all too brief time. Loved this hotel, the staff were warm and lovely people, so helpful. This is just an amazing hotel if you want an authentic experience. The tile in our room was original, we had a lovely room. Also, highly recommend the restaurant, perhaps one of the best in Saumur and the food and wine pairing was fabulous. Wonderful ambiance. I wish I was still there.

Room Tip: I don't believe there is a/c so perhaps it would be quite hot in July, but no complaints otherwi...

Saumur is not your regular American tourist stop, we arrived there at the end of biking tour of the Loire Valley and found this hotel to be a terrific end to a long day of biking.

The staff was capable of communicating in English as well as tolerant with our little-bit of French. Justly proud of the hotel, we got the tour on the way to our rooms. The central stairway has been beautifully painted and the dome at the top is amazing.

The hotel is on the main street facing the Loire River but the view is in the back. Our windows opened onto the courtyard but, more stunning, was the view of the Saumur castle. Massive and beautiful, it was like artwork through the window. At night the castle is tastefully lit. What a lucky find for us.

The room was spacious by European standards, spotlessly clean and quiet. The bathroom was spacious by anyone's standards with a comfortable shower set-up. There is an elevator and a continental breakfast is available at an extra price.

We did not try the restaurant, took our chances exploring the town and had a great time. We found a wonderful little square with restaurants and a memorable chocolate shop instead.

Don't skip Saumur and don't skip the Hotel Anne Anjou.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the castle.

We stayed at Hotel Anne d'anjou for 3 nights as we wanted a central base in Saumur for doing some tours of the famous wine cellars. The hotel was in a great location as lots of restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. Secure parking was available for an extra €12/day but you can park for free opposite the hotel which we did. The hotel had a lot of character but is quite tired looking & our classic room overlooking the river was nothing special. It was very hot when we were there & there was no air conditioning so the first night we left our window open which was a huge mistake. The road was noisy & I got eaten alive by Mosquitos from the river. The 2nd night we requested a fan which helped but it was still very stuffy. The restaurant Les Menustrels which is on the hotel complex had great reviews so we tried it out. The food & service was good but the menu quite obscure so if you're not after fine dining I would choose a restaurant in Saumur centre instead.
Our main gripe with the hotel was the breakfast. We didn't realise breakfast wasn't included in our booking & when we checked in we weren't informed. So the 3 mornings we were there we went downstairs & had breakfast assuming we were on b&b. It wasn't great quality at all. All the pastries were supermarket standard, the brioche was sliced out of a packet, the only hot option was scrambled egg & sausage & they weren't even hot. Most mornings we just had a coffee & a croissant because it was so unappealing. Then when we checked out we were stung for €15 per person per day for breakfast! Totalling €90 for a couple of coffees & a couple of croissants! We were astounded but paid the bill & left. Once we arrived back home we sent an email complaint to both the hotel & then to the hotel chain "Chateaux & Hotels Collection" which we believed to be fairly upmarket hotels & would perhaps be a little embarrassed at the standard of food served in one of their hotels. But no, both the hotel & head office couldn't seem to comprehend how we wouldn't like their "great selection of breakfast". Needless to say we wouldn't stay at one of their hotels again.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the back of the hotel as it will be quieter & you can open your window at night...
