My wife and I recently spent several days in Amboise, and were very happy to have been able to stay at the very carefully restored and furnished small hotel St Pierre in the center of the historic district. Regis, the hotel's owner/manager, greeted us, checked that our car was in a secure location, and helped us make reservations that evening at a nearby restaurant. It was the start of a most enjoyable visit to Saumur and the surrounding area.
It was a great convenience - and not one that is usual in restored historic buildings - to have an elevator at Hotel St Pierre.
The care and attention to detail that make for an exceptionally appealing ambience were evident throughout the hotel; in the bar/reception area, the glassed in patio where breakfast is served in style and in abundance, and in in the rooms. - Our room, on the second floor, had a beamed ceiling, a large and comfortable bed, adequate space, a well-functioning bathroom with tub/shower and separate toilet room, and a large window overlooking the church across the street, seemingly within arm's length from our window. The room - and everywhere in this lovely hotel - was very well maintained by Regis and his staff. And even though the hotel is located in the heart of the historic town, very near the shops, cafes and restaurants that make that area both lively and appealing for visitors and locals alike, there was amazingly little street noise at night.
Regis seemed to be on-site from early in the morning until late at night, and was always cordial and helpful. His considerate and helpful service, along with that provided by all staff at Hotel St Pierre, made us feel like we were house guests of Regis and his family - as I imagine many other guests have too during their stay.
We were very much struck during our stay at Hotel St Pierre by the abundance of fresh peonies that were in all the ground floor rooms of the hotel, adding yet another welcome touch to the overall ambience of calm and comfort.
We would be very happy to return and highly recommend a stay at Hotel St Pierre in Saumur.
The town itself is very attractive, its historic center kept largely free of vehicles, its chateau is impressive, and there are numerous good places to enjoy the good food, the wine, the historic atmosphere and the liveliness of this region of the Loire valley.
